The last of SEPTA's old Silverliner II and Silverliner III train cars, dating from the 1960s, are making their final runs this week.

The two cars, the last remnants of a fleet of 75, will be taken out of service Friday evening, a day before a federal waiver of handicapped-accessibility rules expires. They will spend their final days on SEPTA's shortest regional rail line, shuttling between Suburban Station and Cynwyd.

SEPTA has been gradually replacing its oldest cars with new Silverliner V cars for the past 20 months, as new cars arrive from the Hyundai-Rotem Corp. assembly plant in South Philadelphia.

Plagued by delays, Hyundai has delivered 99 of 120 Silverliner V's to SEPTA, and 90 of those are operating in revenue service. SEPTA hopes to have all the cars, purchased for $274 million, by September.

The oldest two cars still running are a Silverliner II built in 1963 by the Budd Co. for the Reading Railroad and a Silverliner III built by St. Louis Car Co. for the Pennsylvania Railroad in 1967, according to the Philadelphia chapter of the National Railway Historical Society.

SEPTA and the historical society gave rail buffs a farewell tour on the old Silverliners last month.

With the new cars and its existing Silverliner IV cars, SEPTA will have a fleet of about 400 cars to carry passengers on its 13 regional rail lines. Passengers have faced overcrowding on rush-hour trains for several years, because of shortages caused by increasing ridership, delays in new car deliveries, and removal of cars for repairs or maintenance.

SEPTA is selling its old Silverliners to a Newark scrap dealer for about $2300 each.

The last runs for the old Silverliners on Friday will be as Train 1089, leaving Suburban Station at 7:03 p.m., and Train 1091, leaving Suburban at 7:59 p.m.

Odd numbers to Cynwyd, even numbers to Suburban. Some examples here.

2300 bucks....any of them going to any musuems? I mean they are only a half a century old and still run, from very iconic well known railroads, from factories that everyone in those neighborhoods know of that don't exist anymore.

That was a typo, I believe-it should have read $23000. Also, the cars have all been sold already to Dublin Scrap in Newark (NJ).

That really sucks. What a shame..

Why? You know of someone with $23,000 ready to remove the cars from SEPTA property? Furthermore, if you have a bit more than $23,000, just go over to Dublin Scrap and offer to buy the cars from them. Again, you'd need to haul them away yourself.

And the scrap dealer can sell them to whomever he chooses. SEPTA was offering the cars for $69,000 and only the Reading THS ponied up at that price to save 9001. Other museums can negotiate whatever deals they want with the scrap dealer which will probably be for less than what SEPTA was offering.

Other scrap dealers have not only sold cars along, but also put them into storage to await future buyers. LETX is probably the best example. The problem with the ex-SEPTA cars is that they aren't HEP compatible so they won't be much use in tourist service which will limit how many get saved.

at 50 or so ton per car and some stuff resellable yes $23 000 is bargain.
50 tons of steel/stainless steel, traction motors etc etc.
Traction motors for example are also used on drilling rigs.

If you mean ALCO/GE PA's there are 2 here in the US & 2 at the Mexican railroad museum at Puebla. These are the 4 ex-Delaware & Hudson (nee ATSF) "PA4" engines, rebuilt by Morrison Knudsen in 1974 with V16 251 prime movers for service on Amtrak's Adirondack. After Turboliners took over they were briefly leased to MBTA for Boston commuter service & went south in 1978.

No, those are the Kawasaki PA4's.
PA3's were Hawker Siddeley cars of 1972 and regarded as structurally inferior to the 1965 ST Louis cars.

Simple confusion in generation numbers.

PA1=1965
PA2=1967
PA3=1972
PA4-1986

People tend to blend the St Louis PA1 & PA2 together. All the blind motors came within the 1965 group.
