Cool!I must ask, however: given that MTA is gradually replacing CFLs with LEDs in subway tunnels, would it be more efficient (and cost-effective, of course), to pursue wireless Internet via LED? One company already deals with such systems (albeit on a much smaller scale) and has achieved speeds comparable to DSL (3 Mbps). Slow by today's standards, but with experimental speeds in excess of 230 Mbps, methinks such would be very promising. visit my blog! |

I can see scammers setting up wireless mesh on machines with the SSID of "Free Boingo WiFi" around town pulling in victims who think they're getting the real deal. Fake hotspots are THE thing with scammers these days. :( |

Interestingly, NYCT just rolled out a campaign against electronic-device theft in the subway, calling it a "crime of opportunity". Which is it--keep those devices hidden, or pull them out to use Wi-Fi, giving thieves more chances to rip people's appliances right out of their hands? |

Frankly, I wish both of the Staten Island Ferry terminals (Whitehall and St. George) had free WIFI connections. If we have to wait 30 to 60 minutes for a boat most of the times (except rush hours, of course) - then this is a way to turn that time into something productive.Just my thoughts. Mike |
