R44's on Barges?

I was browsing through the newest images on nycsubway.org, and came across of a series of pictures that are allegedly of R44s on barges.

I'm pretty sure that they are actually R68s or R68As, being that there are windows and rollsigns seen on both the #1 and #2 ends of the second car.

Here is one of the images.
R68s? on the barge

These might be the R44s that did not go through GOH and were stored revenue inactive.

Those are indeed R-68 / R-68A's not R-44s.

Those are clearly new R68's. Not sure why they are being barged, I was under the impression they arrived via rail from upstate via the NYCRR.

The cars were built in France from 1986 to 1988 and shipped to New York Harbor.

I was unaware the hippo bodies were made in France. I thought they were manufactured in Canada.

I remember reading they could be seen throughout the rural French countryside on flatbed trucks.

Those are R68s being delivered. The R68As had number boards behind the motorman's cab windows. I thought the R68s were delivered through Greenville and NYCH same as the overhauled cars and scrap car routing to 2nd Avenue. What shipping routing would these cars need to be proceeding South under the Brooklyn Bridge if they came through either Port Newark like the R62s or it this a typical NYCH routing since there is a freight car aboard?

Take a look at the window arrangement. They are either R-68s or 68As.

They are definitely R44's.

You have to look at the description placed on them as a clue (gives a date of 1987) but also if you look at this pic and you'll see that the number plates are black with 3 white numbers on them.

As to the windows on the head end, I think that they were placed as "single" cars on the barge with the cab end facing forward rather than as married pairs with the non-cab ends facing each other.

I zoomed in and see the number plates really look 3-digit. Only one problem: no R44 (or R46) has cab windows at both ends of their cars. Either they have one (A) or none (B):

Take a good look at the window configuration. R-44s and 46s had a cab and associated window at only one end of the car. The cars in this photo have a cab window at bothe ends of the car which R-44/46s don't have.

I think the latter. Now that I think about it, the only logical way to have them enter the city via rail is via the NYCHR, since there's really no rail crossing (except in Albany) across the Hudson. And if they came directly from France, they would have been offloaded in the "port" of New York, which in recent years means New Jersey.

This would also concur with my observations in 1987 of new R68's sitting on the Bay Ridge ROW near where you normally see freight cars lined up, near the BQE. However, these cars were fully built, with 4 digit number boards and rollsigns.

After closer look, I have to agree that they are R68/68As.

Another clue is the placement of the number plates on the side. R44 and R 46 cars had the back number plate mounted close to the end of the car.

Another tell: The storm door on the 44/46 is flush with the car body; the 68 is recessed like the 40M/42.
