When the expressway was planned..the neighborhood was suffering somewhat economically..
Besides..the road wouldn't have touched the core..it would have skirted around it..going through Bushwick..through ENY/BROWNSVILLE..along the LIRR Bay RIDGE route..it would have been elevated over ATLANTIC AVENUE FROM THE CONDUIT to The Jackie Robinson spur where an inter change would have been built for the three roads[Bushwick Expressway,Interboro and Atlantic]..

A "real" road house is not found in or around urban areas. They are often connected to a filling station and a general store kind of place, but can also be standalone. Mostly they are like diners or biker bars, patronized by the locals. There might be live music, dancing or whatever entertains the folks. They are by no means "fine dining" establishments. Hard but mostly good folk run them. City slickers are often treated warily or even rudely.

"Texas Steak" is a big ass rib cut, with or without bone. It has to be aged at least 30 days. Cooking is done in a fire pit or a big grill (depends on where you happen to be and what the local preference is). Mesquite is absolutely required. The only seasoning put on the steak is salt, pepper, onion and garlic powders, maybe a hit of cayenne. Seasoning is done at room temperature for 2-3 hours before cooking. It is not marinated or buried under a rub. A separate gravy may be served with for dipping...but anyone adding any salt, pepper, or anything else when served gets one hell of a stink-eye.

Road houses may or may not serve Texas Steak, but grilled steak of some sort is always on the menu, along with chicken-fried steak (often gets bigger billing than grilled). No matter how lousy the service might be (by big city standards), you always show your good manners, especially toward the ladies.

Heh. A story that went around the IP crowd was supposed to have occurred in the 19th century when the upstart United Press Syndicate was competed with the Associated Press. The AP suspected the UP was stealing and published a story mentioning a foreign dignitary with a name like "Sihtelot Spueht."

Read it backwards.

And when Vladimir Nabokov wrote Lolita he figured he would have to have it published under a pen name, but he wanted to stamp his authorship on the work, so he named one of his characters "Vivian Darkbloom." Get it?

*VERY* few places here in the US have the right combination of hardware and technique to replicate Peter Luger's steaks.

Apparently it goes beyond hardware and technique. They are reputed to pay top dollar and have first choice to pick the very best steaks before other top-of-the-line steakhouses can even get to them. And, of course, the expertise to know what a top quality steak is.

Know the area at all? It is just west of Islip Town Hall on Montauk Highway/Main Street. If you're coming east on Sunrise, get on the service road at Exit 45 Route 111, but just go to the next traffic light and turn right on Commack Road (n.b., NOT the Commack Road that starts in North Bab), which runs into Nassau Avenue after it crosses the Montauk Line and ends by making a loop around Town Hall. Parking is available to the right of that loop.

If coming down 111, make a right where it ends at Montauk and it's a few blocks down, big ex-bank building on your right.

If you don't like the way your steak is flamed, you can come back to the forum and flame me.

Well, yes and no. construction stopped during WW2...when the war was over, the BoT probably had every intention of picking up where they left off- hence the 1948 model board. But by then, Moses was ascending in power, and the money to do a proper construction job out there just never came through- Moses made sure it didn't.

I think that was where the Expressway was supposed to go- and Conduit Blvd would've been the service roads. It runs straight towards the extra-wide section of the Belt Pkway near JFK.

But since the expressway will never be built (fortunately, IMO) this could well be a good spot for subweay extention. Like you siad elsewhere, the new subway could vault over or under the Belt where required...

That may well be.

There is a tradition of name-changing at the border of the city and Nassau County, at least. Until recently it was Jamaica Avenue on one side of the street and Jericho Tpke on the other at the border; Grand Central Pkwy to NSP; Merrick Blvd to Road.

OTOH, I know Northern Blvd. keeps that name deep into Nassau County.

Many people in the Town of Babylon c.1970 used to call Montauk Highway / Main Street from Amityville through Babylon Village Merrick Road, but now it only seems to be a smattering of old-timers/

There was a massive "pimping" station at the base of the conduit (at Atlantic Ave) which kept the water flowing into the reservoir at an even level via a force tube. That force tube is underneath the appropriately named Force Tube Ave, which if you look at Google Maps runs directly between Conduit/Atlantic and Highland Park.

If you go to this this 1924 map of area you can see the remains of the station, and the conduit before Conduit Ave was built.

Well it was 75th and not 76th Street...but there is proof that a station was planned for there. I wonder if the BMT takeover is what put the kibosh on that plan.

A jog by EFulton Street el probably occurred by Euclid Avenue, as the main building now standing where it would have been is a municipal building---and then other properties that appear to be newer.

One of the things that 1924 map also seems to show is the original end of Pitkin Av and where South Rd picks up about a block later. By the time the subway was built Pitkin Av was through routes to South Rd and the question that i have posed is whether or not the construction of the 76 St station was done at the same time that Pitkin was through routed. If that were the case, it may explain why no records exist of the station;s construction. If the subway construction and the through routing of Pitkin were both done by a department other than the B of T that would explain the absence of any records of its construction. We may just have been looking in the wrong place.

If you have read my posts and also checked other sources, you will see that the subway down Pitkin and the takeover of the Fulton St El were supposed to coexist. Under the original plan, the Pitkin subway was to have connected to the LIRR ROW in the area of Aqueduct R T and existing BMT signaling was to be used east (RR south) of the 80 St interlocking on the Fulton St El structure. For whatever reason, subway construction was haled down Pitkin Av and the structure S/O Rocky Blvd redesigned to create Liberty Jct. Records I have, indicate that the decision to build Liberty Jct was made between the original 1948 opening of the A Line to Euclid and 1951 when a B of T report on new subway lines shows what eventually became Liberty Jct.

Okay, it's a shelled out station, like South 4th Street. The City connected the Liberty el to the IND and later connected the el to the Rockaway line. They walled off the tunnel to 76th (or 79th) Street and sealed off the accesses. Really nothing to foam about, right!
