The Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) is investigating yet another accusation of distracted driving among its employees.

The video shows a streetcar driver allegedly applying make-up while driving a streetcar.

The TTC is currently investigating and attempting to identify the driver accused of applying makeup while driving – a practice Brad Ross of the TTC says is “unsafe” and “certainly unprofessional.”

Distracted driving is a significant concern of TTC management says Ross.

In 2011, of the 38,000 complaints the TTC received, over 300 of those were for ‘safety violations’ - a concern that includes distracted driving.

Ross also told Global News that a driver has been fired for distracted driving, though wouldn’t provide specifics.

Despite the hundreds of complaints, the complaints stem from a small minority.
“We have 12,000 employees who work for the TTC, 5,000 of those are drivers. The vast, vast majority do an excellent job everyday delivering safe, reliable transit to the city of Toronto,” Ross said.

Transit advocates though say Torontonians face far greater problems with the TTC than distracted drivers.

“Yes, you are going to find occasional drivers... who are distracted – that’s not the vast majority of TTC operators,” said Steve Munro, a transit advocate. “There are more important things about TTC policy, funding, service, planning.”

The makeup applying driver Is just the latest in a string of TTC drivers allegedly driving distracted in 2012.

In January, a bus driver was photographed allegedly using a cell phone while driving and in April, a TTC driver was caught texting while driving a subway train – a video of which garnered thousands of views after being posted on YouTube.

Nope, a motorman operates the streetcar and a conductor collects the fares. If somebody on streetcar does both jobs, they are an OPERATOR. Go to Toronto and see who does what.

Did you miss "strictly speaking." Driver is an anachronism. Living things are "driven."

Just as the unionized people who operate trucks are "teamsters." Do you consider the cylinders of an internal combustion engine to be a "team." But they once drove teams of horses or similar animals.

And for full disclosure, I am not from Earth, but so what.

A conductor MAY collect fares, but that is not the defining issue. A conductor is responsible for the conduct of a railway vehicle, and traditionally gives the person operating the vehicle instructions.

The Long Island Rail Road, for one, shows the traditional roles that go with the titles. The conductor has the traditional job of receiving train orders and instructing the engineer as needed. He or she also specifies the immediate duties of the other employees of the train. The public rarely sees this unless there is an emergency situation or happens to see the conductor telling the brakeman and any collectors which cars to cover.

On the LIRR the conductor, the brakeman and collectors all collect fares. On a freight train the conductor and brakemen don't collect any fares at all. since cows and sheep don't carry pocketbooks. Collecting fares isn't what makes a conductor a conductor.

In Brooklyn you were still a [trolley] motorman, even after they dropped conductors, until the BofT introduced the term "Surface Line Operator" to cover both trolley motormen and bus drivers.
