Not when something existed before THEY showed up on the scene. They don't have a leg to stand on....get it? look it up some of your dusty textbooks.

That was just about the start of Moses' decline in power and was a topic in my urban politics class at Queens College in 1965.

Either that, or "only 1 or 2 trains a day use this station." Not that far from the truth...

Exactly. And the spokesman for the LIRR is dead on. It's been an active train yard for over 100 years. If they were dumb enough to buy a "luxury" apartment overlooking the yard, that's their problem.

How do these things get built without soundproofing in this day and age . . . ?

That's the problem. They now realize that reselling these units for a huge profit is unlikely.

This past weekend I met someone who, before and after he moved into Ossining, looked to find a group trying to shut down Sing Sing, converting the land into a park. And he was a defense attorney so he surely knew of the joint!

Buy low sell high (maybe with some good old government support).

From a previous message: "We need a transit version of Robert Moses to get things done. Moses never let NIMBY's stand in his way."

This might be one of those times when the adage, "Be careful what you ask for" might be appropriate.

The reputation of Robert Moses was that he (and /or his agencies) were often stubborn about wanting to do something "their way" with little influence or advice from outside persons. In the subways, and the planning for the subway lines - that could be both good and bad.

On the forums there are folks who want to promote a revived Rockaway LIRR route, that has not operated for decades. There are other folks with other ideas: creation of the orange M-train, revival of the Staten Island North Shore route, ideas about the Second Avenue subway, among plenty of other ideas. This point is not about the merits of any of those ideas, but that a receptive ear is needed to HEAR any of these ideas.

If there is no receptive ear - and Robert Moses was not known for being "receptive" - then almost none of those kinds of ideas could ever be enacted unless the "Transit Czar" wants them. There has to be some merit to the notion that ideas about transit (and several other topics) get receptive hears, that there goodness when such stuff is debated and fussed about in the public arena.

A "Transit Czar" sounds nice when it seems that "nothing can get done", when it seems that "stuff just takes too long a time to get built", and that particular bull-dozer of the moment is not tearing down YOUR BLOCK. There is also the adage, "Be careful what you ask for."

Mike
