That's what these people don't realize. That yard was there LONG before they were. That's what happens when you move into a neighborhood that was completely (or almost all) industrial for many, many years before many buildings were converted to livable lofts and newer buildings were built. |

However, because it's "the LIRR" they feel that it's OK to disrespect it and bash it. If it was a highway, they wouldn't ask to stop running cars on it, they would simply move out. |

Yes, build barriers as high as the apartments and let sunlight be blocked in addition to the alleged noise! There's a grade crossing about 100 or so feet east of Vernon boulevard used primarily by industrial vehicles; my suggestion is for the LIRR to have the engineers blow the standard long-long-short-long whistle as loud as they can whenever it's necessary to do so. The LIRR can then say they're providing free music or the neighborhood yuppies..... |

Interesting thing about noise barriers: they CAN utterly destroy the character of a city. My family lives in Henderson, Nevada, where EVERY main (four-lane) street has noise barriers on both sides of the street, from one end of a loooong block to the other, endlessly. That's what you see as you drive along: solid beige noise walls. No houses, stores, or anything else to distinguish one block from the next. It's just depressing. It's like driving through an open cut. |

With noise barriers like that, for all intensive purposes, you've CREATED a barrier 4 lanes wide right through the neighborhood, worse than just having the street. Why would they want to look at a frickin' wall? |

The problem (for these residents) is that there's an active railyard in the area. Obviously, the yard needs to operate, but in typical NIMBY fashion, they think the railyard needs to conform to their desires. |
