Greetings Everyone.Today, one of the PRR's most famous icons passed from the railroad scene; "ALTO" Tower, which has stood sentinel for many years guarding the "Mountain" in Altoona,PA. and over the famous "Horseshoe Curve" was closed by Norfolk Southern as the Re-signalling project in Altoona has almost reached completion. The PRR "Position Light" signals just west of the tower were removed today as well as the Penn Central era signal bridge just east of the 17th Street bridge.Rumor has it that the tower will be preserved and will be dis-assembled shortly to be moved to its new home at the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania in Strasburg,PA.A special word of thanks to "Altoona Works" for keeping those who were interested in this sad date in railroad history with up to the minute updates.Farewell "ALTO Tower",Altoona will never be the same...

Actually, I regret the loss of position light signals more than switch towers, no rational reason why..

More like they'll try to preserve the tower as the all wooden structure might fall apart when they try to move it as happened with MO at Cresson. If NS really wanted to go out of their way they would have preserved it in situ as a satellite part of the museum.
