All new equipment for both LIRR/Metro North have a sliding shade that covers up the cab window for the safety of the passengers, so that is nothing new!

The BMT Multis had a similar window to the R-62s but it was almost the full width of the cab door and not quite as high from top top bottom and no self respecting BMT M/M ever covered them over.

I can't be sure about M/N since if that were the case, then why are the engineers using newspaper instead of the shade? I know LIRR does but according the a M/N trainmaster I met, M/N engineers are strictly prohibited from covering over that glass and I would imagine in the next couple of days, there will be trainmasters and road foremen riding and enforcing that rule including issuing violations. Even without that specific rule, I d know that NYCT has a rule against making unauthorized modifications to equipment and that would certainly fall under that category.

You do recall that flight that BOTH pilots fell asleep and they overflew their destination 150 miles and did not answer the radio?
Back under Northwest Flight 188, NTSB confirmed both pilots were asleep

Very few 3-person planes (Boeing 707, Douglas DC-8, McDonnell-Douglas DC-10, Boeing 727, Boeing 747 (-100 through -300 only) and Lockheed L-1011) are in commercial passenger service (there are some operating as freighters). And even on those, generally the 3rd crew member is a Flight Engineer.

But jump seats are not for navigators, as you alleged. And no U.S. airliner uses navigators any more (haven't for many years). Flight engineers, yes, in some foreign airlines but there are no aircraft in domestic U.S. passenger service still using a flight engineer.

Well, for obvious reasons, I cannot present proof here which will definitely counter that, but I do know for a fact it is forbidden here on MNR. They are also against the practice of using on-board ads as sun visors.

I saw 2 M/M get taken OOS on R-46s in the same week back in like 77 or 78 for papering-over the cab door. I had a buddy who was a M/M on QB back then and he said a lot of M/M absolutely hated the window because they were used to the broom closets...especially if they had to "refresh" during a run. He got scolded (but not written up) for using a jug going through Rutgers...said he hoped they enjoyed seeing his Buick.

Back in the 70s the R-44s and 46s had the lower half of those cab door glasses painted black leaving the top half completely clear. Instead of using a heavily tinted glass to cut down on glare like Philly uses on the BSS, the NYCTA tried all sorts of ineffective methods until the current type of light diffusing glass was developed which allows light to come straight through but not from the sides. That should be something that MNRR and the LIRR should consider although I seem to recall hearing that MNRR already uses that type of glass.

They started modifying the M-7a's with the polarized glass, I would say about 50% of cars is done, same 50% of Bombardier cab cars was done so far.
After the past event, im not so sure MNCR will continou replacing the glass with polarized units.
The M-8's came with regular glass and so far no plan to modify that.

They could always install just a tinted glass which would cut down on the glare but still allow the engineers to be observed for improper performance. Maybe even NYCT should do that also.

I really only cared about being able to have something vaguely resembling a RFW on the 44/46 fleet back in the 70s and 80s. A few times an m/m stuck his head out and asked if I was Supervision...dunno why they thought that, maybe my military officer looks. I didn't really care what the m/m did in there as long as he got me where I was going. Many smoked or ate. BFD. Different time.

Being a rat?? Back then, when I hired out, being a rat & getting caught in the act would have a definative negative effect on your heartbeat. We had a stick together & get the job done mentality & if you fucked up & got caught, you (& your union rep) were on your own. You took your spanking without any help from your co-workers, for someday, they might be in a similar spot. Keep your mouth shut, cover your job & mind your buisness was the 11th commandment.
Now, the more you rat, the bigger the reward. That was my take when the MTA took over. The old mantra is as dead as a Penn Central profit margin.
Such as the world we live in today.
