Friday Night On The High Rails

Posted by Train Dude on Sun Jun 3 11:41:06 2012

My (new) New York & Atlantic GP38-2 #270 made its first run Friday night but there were some other interesting units as well.

Leaving 303 track for its first run

I wonder, how many professions outside the railroad industry have people who are both employed within it and have it as a hobby? You don't see mailmen building classic mailboxes in their spare time. It's something unique to rail-related professionals.

Great as always. I wish we had the Star Trek transporter, I'd show up to see the club layout system in person. I's a four hour trip from Baltimore to New York.

This might be of interest to you. The club I belong to has a current membership of about 74 members. Of those, there are 4 who are or were employed by NYC Transit but I'm the only member who worked on the rail side. The others come from Surface (busses). Also among the members are a neuro-surgeon and at least one lawyer. None ever worked for a railroad.

Back to your point, I'm certain that there are some in aviation who build or fly model planes. I'm certain that there are sailors who build or sail model boats. I was blessed with being able to work in a field that was also a hobby. Unfortunately, the higher you go, the further you move from the things that you love. I still have the locomotive and cars that my father bought me more than 60 years ago. Such is the nature of this hobby.

Probably to watch the Yankees wallop the Orioles. In the Nineties the birds generally roosted in the bottom of the AL east. Last time the Birds were in the World Series (and won it) was 1983.

Police officers collect police memorabilia and your favorite politician Bill Clinton collects campaign buttons and other political relics. Militaria collecting is quite popular among Military veterans. Mailmen have been known to collect stamps. :-)

Nooooo! the last time was last September for Orioles/Angels. This time who knows - maybe the Royals. I love the stadium and especially like walking Eutaw Street and seeing Boog Powell.
