Those trains are like 12 years old, I would imagine the 160 MDBF will be similar when they become that age. Especially the ones on the E/F lines. Those R142s go though a lot of abuse, during the week @ Flatbush terminal those trains get little to no rest between their trips. Long routes from almost the Bronx/WC border to south BK. The 142A MDBF will be probably get a little better once they go on the (7). I noticed the 62As outperformed the 142A. |

We've not touched on this in a while but any fleet can have a bad month. Any line can have a bad month. Any maintenance shop can have a bad month. Therefore to look at the MDBF as an accurate indicator of performance might be misleading. The far more accurate indicator would be the 12 month moving average. You only have to look at the R-46 to see what I'm driving at.In March 2012, the MDBF was 100,290 which was 9.88% higher than the March 2011 MDBF. But look at the 12 month moving MDBF. It's down 9.33% over the same period. Of course, that fleet is divided up between two maintenance shops and you'd have to look and see how each shop's fleet is working. You cannot accurately draw any conclusions based on these numbers alone. They make for interesting comparisons but that's all. |

In March 2011 those cars ran at 617,000 MDBF. In march 2012 they ran at 120,000 miles between breakdowns. If you look at the 12 month moving average, those cars are performing at around 160,000 miles between breakdowns so the one month snap shop of March 2011 or March 2012 was not really indicative of the car's true performance. As I said, any fleet can have a good month or a bad month and that's why yo need to look at 12 month moving average and trend lines to see which way you are going. |

They are going to have to bite the bullet, buy some rustoleum paint, and SMS the R42's. They have to go another 5 years, especially now with that Kawasaki-Alstom shit. |

No weekend use, less salt air, no issues with route signs saying "West End".Send a couple of R160's from CIY to Jamaica, and a couple more R46's from Jamaica to Pitkin. |

Is that to infer they spike upwards AFTER immediately receiving SMS improvments and drop to their averages respective to barn assignments since the R62s got ECAM updates in the last year or so? |

SMS maintenance gives new components and precise settings under optimal conditions. (its easier to do maintenance when the entire car is disassembled). Once the "New" components hit the field, they don't remain new for long and the precise adjustments made during SMS are not quite as easy with seats and walls in the way - so performance tails off. Unfortunately, most maintenance shops do not have the luxuries of time and manpower to completely disassemble a car to do that level of work. The car maintenance allocations actually center around the overhaul shops and not the maintenance shops. |
