Restore The R-44s Already!!!

OK,Folks-It is great that the R32s and R42s will be operating on the "A" Line once again this Summer. With that said,i think it is high time that the R-44s that are still operable be restored to service."Train Dude" did mention that there are 80 or so cars that can be restored to service.I am sure with some work that additional cars can be restored to service as well.Well, why not? They are just sitting dormant. Why waste them when there is clearly a need for additional equipment, especially in the Summer months when the A.C. is needed.Yes,i understand that this will require quite a bit of work but the end result will be worth it in the end.It is quite sad to read just why the R-44s met their untimely end.Once again, the ones who make policy never see the end results of thir decisions.Lets think about this a second:We have 80 somewhat serviceable cars just sitting there, while other car classes are run into the ground(read:R32s and R46s)I have operated Pitkin's and 207's R46s and they just do NOT operate as well as Jamaica's fleet.Sorry, thats the way it is; Pitkin's R-46s have PLENTY of dead motor's and cut out doors.Excess power,no dynamic brakes i have seen it all.Resurrecting at least some of the R-44s will take some of the strain off of the R-32 and R-46 fleet operating out of Pitkin and 207.I KNOW it can be done. Its just a question of how..."Train Dude":what say you???

He already answered here.

The 80 cars left are the ones that were not 'enhanced', hence they are not worth returning to service.

I just don't see NYCT spending the money.

As per TD, good parts were taken out of the 44's to SMS the R68's, saving $$$.

I guess that they were saved for parts or scrap. Lots of copper in the motors, pipes and condensers. The condensers can be re-used if needed but since the motors were DC motors and most of the current equipment has AC motors, I think they will be scrapped. BTW all freon (22) is recovered as well.

Greetings all!!! I guess not everyone here shares my sentiment for the restoration of the R-44s.Realistically,too much time may have passed for their return.However-There they ALL sit, dead and unused while the R-32s,R-42s and R-46s are run into the ground.I know that there are still "Live" R-44s here and there, but most have now been stripped just to save a few $$$ on the R-68 SMS.Yes,some R-44s had the rotted frame problem, but most did not.So to tar an entire car class for what was a small problem seems wasteful to me,especially when the "MDBF" was at an all time high.I realize it seems far fetched to see their return, but i can dream, cant i? It seems sad to think that none of them will ever make the "Dash" over the "Flats" ever again.But-like they say,"You never know"...Peace,everyone!

Hey man I feel the same way you do. I was totally surprised myself when I stopped seeing the r-44's. It seems that it came out of nowhere that they were retired as well as some r32's. Why I feel both were stupid decisions considering the situation the mta is facing with this car shortage. I'm here with you in wanting the r-44's back in service however we have seen them for the last time in passenger service.

If Staten Island, it has to be the one of the cars numbered #388-399. If they do save any of those I could hope they save motors from the NYCT R44s and implant them back into those cars. They were former NYCT cars that were transferred to Staten Island.

yeah...also, while I'm not an HVAC professional (so I'll accept correction from anyone with superior knowledge), I believe that "old" stryle Freon is no longer manufactured, and yet the extant AC systems that run on it can;t accept "new" freon.

Accordingly, any "old" freon that's out there would have a ready market for re-use in older systems, no?

Whatever the merits of trying this, I came to dislike them a lot. They looked very deteriorated. I'm speaking just to my personal likes and dislikes. I'll let you pros out there debate the cars' actual mechanical and physical merits.

But also, let's consider a financial aspect- to me, it's not a good plan to spend whatever it wuld take to get these cars back on the road for just a few years...it would make more sense, I think, to speand the $$ to get the R179s into production and in service.

As I understand it, there are still 80 or so R44s which could be put into service without TOO much work. Getting those cars running for just the summertime, instead of shuffling the entire A/C fleets and moving around cars from Jamaica and ENY might make sense... or might not. But 80 cars is 10 trains, which would eat up a good chunk of the C.

Meanwhile, SIRT keeps their R44s trucking along with no end in sight.
