Talkeetna, Alaska to Whittier, Part 3 of 3

There was another passenger train in the yard at Anchorage. No. 4326, a SD70MAC, is on the north point:

And No. 32, a F40PH, is on the south point:

In the middle of the train is a bistro car, serving sandwiches, salad, and both alcohol and non-alcohol libations:

Photobucket

Very interesting historical photos from the ARR hanging on the walls:

Watch out for the pinch points and keep the brake pressure up!

ARR's version of TMP, hard at work:

We pass a work train:

And soon enough, we reach the outskirts of Whittier, which is entered through...Whittier Tunnel! It's unique in that it's the longest combined vehicle-railroad tunnel in North America. Vehicles travel in one direction only in one lane, taking turns. The train track is in the middle of the lane. Cars and trains take turns using the tunnel. Our train arrived early and we waited 15 minutes before we could proceed:

And on the other side of the tunnel is the Sapphire Princess:

Hope you enjoyed the tour!

Most certainly did enjoy, each and every part man!!! All outstanding, start to finish!!! :-)

And that conductor needs to shine them boots!!! TMP at least keeps a good shine, despite all the footwork the job entails!!! :-D (Thanks for that little shout-out so to speak!!) :-)

Again, an excellent series of photos. Are the ARR's F40PHs powered or being used as the local equivalent of Amtrak's Cabbages? Or are they just there to provide HEP? It seems odd they'd put a second HEP engine on a train hauled by a (presumably) HEP equipped SD70MAC, but it does sound like the MAC's performance with one truck inverter given over to supplying hotel power has been less than stellar.

And it's always good to see a use for a Gallery car that doesn't involve it inconveniencing thousands of commuters a day.

It was pretty muddy down at Talkeenta and the conductor has to manually line the switches. I guarantee you that shined boots wouldn't stay shiny for long!

I can't speak as to the entire fleet but this bad boy was a non-powered cab/HEP unit.

It hasn't changed much since I was there in 2008. At that time they had an RDC set parked at Talkeetha.

I only took one ARR trip when I was in Alaska on the Glacier Discovery (and I got some photos at other places) but the rail-car tunnel was pretty neat, we did get to go through it on that train too.
