The last leg of our land tour was ending and we took the Alaska RR from Talkeetna to Whittier, where our cruise ship awaited. The Talkeetna train station can be kindly referred to as primitive, with nothing more than some open air log benches and parking spots for tour buses:

Our train arrives:

The train is a push-pull job with 4322, a SD70MAC, on the point for the trip south to Whittier:

As you saw in the video, this is manual switch territory:

Manual block territory as well. The engineer calls in the location when he enters a new block:

We pass breathtaking scenery along the route, through Wasilla (hi, Sarah!) and Anchorage. Someone took a shot at that window and you can see the bullet impact in the upper left:

On to Part 2!

Excellent photos. Any idea if MCKI Block is supposed to be called out phonetically on the radio? Or would it be simply called out by letter? If the former I would think it'd be a bit ambiguous and up for interpretation by the engineers.

What I heard was by letter. I'm guessing all the crews know the block names and they're distinctive enough that there's no confusion.
