2nd Track Coming to LIRR’s Main Line

A long-awaited $138-million project to build a second track on the Long Island Rail Road’s the Main Line—the LIRR’s busiest branch—from Farmingdale to Ronkonkoma will begin in July and eventually ease congestion, officials said Thursday.

State lawmakers had urged the MTA to accelerate the project during state budget negotiations earlier this year to improve LIRR service and stir economic development. They also said the double track will pave the way for redevelopment of the Republic Train Station, although that part of the project will not be completed until 2018.

“That’s why we fought so hard to make sure work starts now, not in 2015,” said New York State Sen. Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (R-Merrick), chairman of the Senate’s Transportation Committee.

Fuschillo said the project will create more than 300 jobs and add benefits to transit-oriented-developments such as the Republic/Route 110 Corridor project and the Ronkonkoma Hub.

Cuts to the Metropolitan Transportation Authority in 2010 left the LIRR with only $30 million for the project and delayed it until 2015. But this spring the State Legislature included the funds in the MTA’s five-year capital plan to start the work sooner.

“I view this as a game-changer for this region of Long Island,” said LIRR President Helena Williams.

The double track will also offer further intra-Island commuting opportunities, she said. Other officials said they are optimistic about the benefits this project will provide for LI’s economy.

“The impact of this important return on our investment will boost our region’s strength, and specifically our economy,” state Sen. Lee Zeldin (R-Shirley) said.

Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone, who was also involved in coordinating the project, called the development “a homerun.”

Environmental assessment and the design stage of the track work are set to start July 1. Williams said the project will consist of two phases.

The first phase will add track from Central Islip to Ronkonkoma and is expected to be completed by September 2016. Phase two will focus on Central Islip to Farmingdale and will begin immediately after the completion of phase one.

Construction is not expected to cause major delays for commuters once it begins next year. Joe Calderone, an LIRR spokesman, said construction will work around the train schedule and occur primarily at off-peak traveling times.

The Main Line between Farmingdale and Ronkonkoma spans 17.9 miles and currently has only 5.3 miles of double track territory. This project will cover the remaining 12.6 miles of single track.

“Double track is a very important project for the LIRR and for Long Island,” Williams said. “It will provide real benefits for decades to come.”

I suspect they didn't bother with a station there to simply avoid the costs of building an upgraded facility with high platforms, especially since the advantage of going electric is the superior acceleration. If one looks from the perspective of traditional commuter operations, there's little reason to build a station there as there's no residential area near by or a park and ride to supply riders. With modern policy perspectives, the station is seen as an inter-modal facility with transfers to local bus services.

The people on the video are talking about redeveloping the Republic Aircraft property with transit oriented development. It has to be the biggest parcel of developable land on Long Island.

What purpose does Pinelawn serve? Most of the nearby residents are done with commuting.

Pinelawn serves cemeteries nearby.

Most of the nearby residents are done with commuting.

There is no commuter parking at Pinelawn and not all trains stop there.

In this video, LIRR's Helena Williams stated the need for apartment housing for young people to keep them on Long Island.

Right here in Farmingdale Village, just 3 miles from where that video was shot, a major development of 115 rental apartments and stores on the ground floor to answer that. This building will be 1/2 block walk to the Farmingdale train station and is described as "Transit Oriented Development".

Work is to start this autumn and be complted in one year.

How does this affect Pinelawn and Wyandanch?

Will they have additional side platforms built or will the existing platforms become island platforms?

Mr Merrick: Your quite right in your statement that most of the residents of Pinelawn are long done with commuting. The station remains open because many people like to visit their loved ones, usually on Mother's Day and Father's Day. Its a grave decision.

My guess is that the new a second track will be built north of the present one. Which means an second platform to be built at Pinelawn, which only platforms two M-7's or M-3's.

Hard to say. Wyandanch platform is on the north side; there seems to be room for a second track on the south side but the platform is going to be a tight fit. I can see it being close to the street like at Deer Park/PineAire. There is a second track (freight) west of Wyandanch as far as W 23rd St - and ample room for another all the way to Little East Neck Road. It will be a REALLY tight fit around Pinelawn; the platform's on the south side; likely will have to relocate Long Island Avenue 100 feet or so to the south through here.

Pinelawn will be tricky to wedge in another track. There are carefully planted old trees on one side of the ROW and little room on the other street side. Everywhere else would be simple. Part of the ROW between Wyandanch and Deer Park is already double tracked, with the other track being unpowered and used for freights.

about time for the second track. i used to live in Farmingdale and the service sucks for AM peak towards Ronkonkoma with one track service. two track service should make better peak service.

Bah, the crossing gates aren't continuously down during rush hour yet - they could probably squeeze in a bit more traffic...

Actually I can see them taking a few "slots" from Port Jeff - HPA trains and giving them to Ronkonkoma...

Why would they do the non-connected part first? I.e. Why double track Ronkonkoma to Central Islip first.

Would it not make more sense to do the Farmingdale to Ronkonkoma, then do the bit to Central Islip next?

Then they can start extending service as the first phase completes? I.e. Make use of the investment sooner?

That's insane. That line is already hampered by it's infrastructure in providing adequate service. About the ONLY advantage I see to fully double-tracking to Ronkonkoma is the ability to extend some of those Farmingdale turnarounds all the way out. You up service east of there without necessarily adding an increased number of trains.

That single track section is probably the most likely to cause delays. If an eastbound train is late, a departing westbound from RO must either wait for it to clear the single track segment or the delayed eastbound must be delayed further to allow the westbound to depart on time. I've ridden train #2006, the 5:11 AM departure from NYP and that train has to sit on the "other" platform of Central Islip and wait for a departing train. It's always late.
