Free MetroCard plan for Barclays Center arena $crapped

Officials have scrapped a plan to give free MetroCards to patrons at the new Nets arena to discourage them from driving.

Developer Forest City Ratner had vowed to give free subway fares to fans who would otherwise drive, but officials dropped that idea from a transportation plan presented Tuesday - saying it wouldn’t make any difference in preventing a traffic mess.

Instead, they’ll focus on promoting the convenience of mass transit - printing information about the 11 subway lines that go to the site on every ticket and ad for the arena, and vowing to “scare” visitors away from driving. The MTA will also increase service after games.

Many advocates say that isn’t enough and criticized the developer for dropping the free fares.

“You sort of have to follow the money. That was a tangible contribution they were going to make to get people to ride transit, and that’s fallen by the wayside,” said Gib Veconi of the Prospect Heights Neighborhood Development Council. “I think that’s kind of outrageous.”

FCR traffic consultant Sam Schwartz said surveys of potential arena goers found the free fares wouldn’t make a difference - and there was no way to make sure the MetroCards were actually used to get to the game.

“We find that the people who were driving to the arena, what they were facing was a $30 charge for parking versus a $2.50 MetroCard. Giving them the free MetroCard was not the incentive” Schwartz said.

“We will scare drivers away from the arena,” he said. “I will be advising people on opening day, don’t even think about driving to the Jay-Z concert.”

MTA officials say they will add additional subway trains after games, have “wildcat” buses available to fill gaps, and add Long Island Rail Road shuttle service.

Arena developers have also cut the size of their on-site parking lot in half, to 541 spots. There will be another 612 spots in parking lots near the Brooklyn Queens Expressway where drivers will board shuttle buses to the arena, and there are about 20 private parking lots near the site.

But critics say without more drastic measures like residential parking permits - a proposal that has made little progress in Albany - the plan would not head off a traffic mess.

“I believe that cars will flood our residential streets and take over parking,” said City Councilwoman Letitia James (D-Prospect Heights), adding dropping the free fares was a bad move. “Economics would go a long way in dissuading individals from driving...They should honor that commitment, period.”

What I am still curious to see is if a game starts at 8pm and finishes late by 10pm, is there any deal in place to extend LIRR hours or service for Queens or LI patrons?

This is a good move. There should be NO free rides. And as been pointed out, a cheap transit fare, with no parking hassles, beats putting up with the BQE and paying a ofrtune for parking any day, in my view of the world. True, there are some folks who know nothing beyond their cars, but that's on them.

Let me tell you a story. On the day of the specialized high school exam at Brooklyn Tech, the entire neighborhood came to a standstill. This was at 8am on a Saturday morning.

On an ordinary Saturday afternoon I wanted to go to Brooklyn Flea at the Williamsburg Bank building and couldn't find parking anywhere within a 10 block radius before I just gave up.

On any day of the week, Fort Greene, Prospect Heights and Park Slope are totally parked up. Flatbush Avenue is jammed, they've changed the pattern on 4th Avenue, Atlantic Avenue is a mess. And then they're going to open an arena at that intersection? What are they thinking?$?$?$

The housing market will take 10 or more years to recover where it will be profitable to build any of the apartments that were in the original plan.

Vanderbilt Avenue is already getting overcrowded with the gentrified crowd. BTW, the ice cream at that place on the corner on Vanderbilt is incredible.

And here is a 100% true story. One day during Flatbush Avenue construction about 20 years ago, they had the entire northbound section closed, and the traffic was diverted to the southbound side, with 2 lanes north in the AM and 2 lanes south other times. It was a mess. But on this day, all 3 lanes were taken by southbound traffic, not letting the northbound through. I jumped out of my 1985 Honda Accord and had my wife take the wheel and I proceeded to walk up and make everyone in the lane move over to let the traffic through, from Nevins all the way past Myrtle. Once I cleared the lane, everyone was honking and cheering and giving me the thumbs up. I was probably the only white guy in the crowd.

Anybody who thinks they'll be able to drive to the game is delusional.

Unless it has to do with excreted U.S. dollars, it's annoying, unnecessary, and unsearchable.

Could you imagine that at Utica Avenue on the #3 and #4 there are empty trains ready to head to Atlantic Avenue once a game lets out. Or at 9th Avenue on the D-train, several empty trains on the middle track and lower level ready to head to Atlantic Avenue once a game lets out, or stored at Prospect Park for the same reason. Just a thought.

Mike
