3 congressmen urge Metra not to OK Englewood Flyover contract due to lack of minorities |

Rep. Bobby Rush called the contract "a shame (and) repugnant to my community." Rep. Danny Davis called the proposed contract "one of the greatest insults to the people" of the Englewood community. And Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. said awarding the contract to the apparent low bidder will "disenfranchise" the Englewood community. "African-Americans have been on the other side of the construction tracks for too long." All three say the apparent low bidder does not have enough minority contractors and would not provide enough jobs to people in the Englewood neighborhood. About 50 people jammed the Metra board room, many carrying signs saying "No work without us" and "Metra re-bid the contract." After addressing the board, the congressmen left with the crowd and headed to a rally at the Thompson Center. Metra acting chairman Larry Huggins said Metra has delayed awarding the contract "in the hope that everyone can come together and work it out." Huggins, a successful minority contractors, noted that he grew up in the Englewood community. Metra has said it worked for the past two years to ensure participation by disadvantaged businesses, and spent $300,000 in outreach efforts to the Englewood community. But in a letter to the commuter rail agency earlier this month, Rush, Jackson and Davis, all Chicago Democrats, charged that contract would give less than 1 percent of the work to an African-American firm, and less than 3 percent to a disadvantaged business enterprise. Metra has said the low bidder, Elgin-based IHC Construction Companies LLC, met the contract’s goal of 25 percent participation by disadvantaged businesses. These can include black, Hispanic and woman-owned firms with a net worth of less than roughly $1 million, under federal law. Metra originally planned to award the contract May 11 but has said it would postpone the awarding of the construction contract until its June 15 meeting. The project, designed to relieve congestion, was originally scheduled to be done in June 2014, but Metra said it now expects to take until the fall of that year. The railroad bridge is intended to ease rail flow on tracks used by Metra, Amtrak and freight railroads. |

The Black Panther issue is what, 40 years old, yet Olog-hai keeps dredging it up. Of course the NS and the A&E are 40 years old too so maybe Olog-hai just lives his life in the past. But there are some facts that maybe need to be more widely known and by presenting them I am not asking for a debate..just asking that you keep 'em in mind.First, Chicago is still the most racially segregated city, 90 percent of the population live in areas that are racially identifiable, Black, white, or hispanic and the Englewood Crossover is within a mostly Black area for a radius of four miles in all directions and going straight south, over twenty miles to the south suburbs beyond Interstate 80-294. On another forum a poster stated that a passenger railroad running through a community should be a community strength, wrong in this case as neither Metra route that will use the crossover serves Englewood. The Rock Island District stopped four miles back at 87th & Halsted (Gresham) and the to-be-relocated Southwest Service hadn't stopped for six miles back 79th & Kedzie (Wrightwood). Neither will stop until the Loop, unless there is a baseball game at 35th Sox Park. True there is a CTA Red line stop nearby. It is reported elsewhere that the major contractor met the minority participation by granting 25 percent to Hispanics and one percent to Blacks and if that is true, the three Representatives have a job to do to insure more parity in the future. Evidently while Olog-hai is so vocal on everything else including stupid ideas like running the North Shore on the Chicago 'L' again, not to mention the Aurora & Elgin, he can't respond to this simple question. The Black Panther issue is what, 40 years old, yet Olog-hai keeps dredging it up. Of course the NS and the A&E are 40 years old too so maybe Olog-hai just lives his life in the past. But there are some facts that maybe need to be more widely known and by presenting them I am not asking for a debate..just asking that you keep 'em in mind. First, Chicago is still the most racially segregated city, 90 percent of the population live in areas that are racially identifiable, Black, white, or hispanic and the Englewood Crossover is within a mostly Black area for a radius of four miles in all directions and going straight south, over twenty miles to the south suburbs beyond Interstate 80-294. On another forum a poster stated that a passenger railroad running through a community should be a community strength, wrong in this case as neither Metra route that will use the crossover serves Englewood. The Rock Island District stopped four miles back at 87th & Halsted (Gresham) and the to-be-relocated Southwest Service hadn't stopped for six miles back 79th & Kedzie (Wrightwood). Neither will stop until the Loop, unless there is a baseball game at 35th Sox Park. True there is a CTA Red line stop nearby. It is reported elsewhere that the major contractor met the minority participation by granting 25 percent to Hispanics and one percent to Blacks and if that is true, the three Representatives have a job to do to insure more parity in the future. Admittedly, this debate is not one for this forum. Again, is there anything in the above paragraphs that is wrong, in error. The man is a Congressman of a district 2000 miles away from you...I believe you live on the West Coast...and has been in that position for twenty years. Same question to Olog-hai, what have you accomplished in the last twenty years? Tell us, just what did the Black Panthers do to Olog-hai, or to Olog-hai's family? That's like saying "what did the Nazis ever do to Olog-hai or to his family" or "what did the communists do" et cetera. Ever heard the saying "as a man thinks in his heart, so is he"? Does something have to affect you personally and acutely in order to stand against it, or do you have to wait until things are too late? It is ENTIRELY DIFFERENT, your argument has no relevance. Answer the question or shut up. What has the Black Panthers ever done to Olog-hai or his family that makes Olog-hai attack the integrity of a twenty year Congressman. Answer. why do you avoid? |

At the moment, we could do well to encourage better eating/exercise habits SOLELY because the increased cost of spiraling diabetes and heart disease will either cost billions or lower our population/life expectancy drasticly. And while we are at it improving public transit wouldn't be a bad idea either. For historical accuracy, one needs to remember that in the 60s "radical leftists" called for fare elimination on the NYCTA and MABSTOA.So, you will note I said nothing about devils of any color, and have no interest in such BS. What I do have interest in is a better place fpor our descendants. |

I appreciate them and wish there were more on this newsgroup who would speak as well. Yes, I know arguing with the likes of Olog-hai is like arguing against a...........
