Congratulations on that. Was the press there to record the occasion? I was on the first Gold Line train from Union Station at an equally ungodly hour, an event well attended by other railfans. I may be at 7th and Metro Monday morning for the first revenue run.

There was no press at 7th/metro, but a channel 5 news reporter and photographer boarded at either Vermont or Western. They stayed at the back of the 1st car and afaik didn't interview anyone, but she may have filmed something back there. Only about 20 or so people showed up for the inaugural public run, which is about what I expected.

Crowds are much lighter than I expected. 3-car trains every 6 minutes some of which are only half full. Even the "full" ones appear to have few standees. Much different than the east la gold line where trains were packed by now.

I was on the first revenue run this morning at 4:54 am. I was surprised to see all three-car trains on Expo. I expected to see two-car trains since it does take some time to build up ridership. My impressions of the line are generally positive. On the return trip downtown a motorist made a right turn on red in front of the train at Crenshaw despite a no turn on red sign, so I suppose we'll see the usual auto/train encounters until motorists figure out the futility of that. I'm not sure what drove the decision where to install crossing gates since major streets like Vermont, Western, and Crenshaw depend on traffic lights for protection.

Salaam, I'm looking forward to seeing your pictures. This morning's roundtrip was completely in the dark.

Expo will run all three car trains because they sometimes need to have Expo trains leave 7th/metro as blue line trains and vice versa. The timetables get totally screwed at rush hour, especially for the blue line.

That's the plan but it's not working great so far and they've been testing for many, many months. There are too many trains bunching and then too many gaps. Blue line trains used to be pretty close to the timetable but the last time that I rode at rush hour they were completely random as well as fewer tph than there should have been.

I did a repeat trip during daylight hours yesterday and was generally impressed. Trains get up to a decent speed in stretches with crossing gates between stations. On the return from LaCienega, another motorist made a right run on red in front of the train, confirming my belief this place is an accident waiting to happen. Perhaps an blindingly bright LED sign is needed - other crossings with gates have them.

The architecture critic for the Los Angeles Times weighed in today. I agree with him that station platform canopies that neither offer shade nor protection from rain are worse than useless.

Note for those with a sweet tooth: The See's Candy Factory store is just steps from the LaCienega temporary terminal. It's open seven days and offers custom selection of candies. Yum! My jones for toffee has been satisfied.

Except that the Expo stations do have a second canopy for sun/rain protection. It doesn't cover the entire platform, but it's bigger than what is on the blue line. So Expo has that plus the more decorative canopies.

I must be lost. What is FIND?

I was on the edge of my seat for weeks wondering what color would represent the Expo Line on maps since "expo" is not a color known to nature. Remember when color choices were discussed before "Expo" was arrived at? Aqua and pink, and City Council Member Bernard Parks vetoed both. I like the color selected, a medium blue for Expo and dark blue for Blue. It links the two lines in the color palette, just as red and purple are linked for the subway lines. Still to be resolved is the through routing pattern once Blue, Expo, and two legs of Gold are linked.

There's an interesting memento on the platform surface at 23rd Street northbound. Maybe Salaam will take a picture of it and post it.

From what I've read (on the L. A. Centric transit board, the routing after the Regional Connector is built will be East L. A. - Santa Monica (Gold) and Pasadena/Monrovia/wherever the Foothill Extension ends up - Long Beach (Blue). Since the latter will be a looooonng-ass route, MTA might implement a short-turn route, maybe for peak hours only, which might have a different color, or maybe just be short-turn Blue Line trains. As part of the RC, there will be a pocket track just north of 7th St/Metro Center station, which could turn the trains without jacking up the through trains.

I've heard metro talk about operations a few times and they are definitely leaning towards a Long Beach-SGV and Santa Monica-Eastside service pattern. They have also indicated that they do not anticipate mixing it up so that some trains could have different destinations.

If equipment is shuffled on an ad hoc basis between Blue and Expo lines in the middle of the day, then the current strip maps are useful, under the KISS principle (Keep It Simple, Stupid). Even today, countless people headed for the Red Line end up on the Purple. Strip maps in the cars showing both Red and Purple are useful for these misguided souls.

Yes, that's why they did the strip maps like that, but I think that they are too confusing. The purple line isn't confusing because it's only a couple of stations. The blue/expo line maps are confusing because the colors are too similar, they don't show the pattern that the trains actually run, and it's visually overloading with too many stations. They'd be better off with no strip maps than what they have now. People could instead look at the line map.

When/if they build the complete Foothill extension, the Blue Line will be a long-ass line (might be longer than the shortest Metrolink route). Will probably be the first MTA rail line to operate out of two yards (Division 11 (North Long Beach) and the new yard that will be built in Irwindale? as part of the Foothill Extension). The East-West Gold Line will be based out of the new yard in eastern Santa Monica that will be built as part of Expo phase 2. Don't know what will happen to the current Gold Line yard just north of Union Station (Division 21). They could always stage some peak-hour trains there to operate Union Station-Long Beach, or something like that.

Yeah there's a Transit Coalition video where the guy at Metro that heads up rail operations said that while they plan to run a Long Beach to San Gabriel Valley service, they really have no idea how it will work. From what I gathered their biggest concern is regarding train operators because the route will likely be too long for one operator to run. To that end what they may do is treat the line as two lines for operational purposes (switch train operators at 7th/metro or Union Station) in a way that most riders will hardly notice.
