As some say here - TRUTH. It's sad to see the shit replace the interesting-looking rolling stock we have now. Soon, it's all going to look like generic boxes on wheels and the subway's going to have absolutely no personality.

And your kids (or grandchildren) will say the same one day when newer cars replace the R143s and R160s.

I think it's sad to see the R44s go, they were such an awesome concept in the 1970s, and despite the small cabs and poor quality, they must've been so cool when they came into play (as the RTS probably was in the early 80s).

Plus, the 75' cars are w/o a doubt, the most comfortable for passengers IMO.

edf40wrjww2msgDetail:detailStr
I looked upon them (as a conductor) as more work. Heh. The "old girls" didn't have announcements, the geese had to look out the window and pay attention to where they were. And we worked OUTSIDE on step plates between cars to operate the doors. Big advantage though, we could leap right off the steps and pound the pith out of anyone who gave us a hard time too. And we were expected to watch out for all ten cars and the folks that were in them of course, and to answer questions. Seemed like more than enough.

And sadly, after a chance to run a set of 143's before the MTA did their "acceptance" (still belonged to Kawasaki at the time) I actually kinda liked them. Aside from the controller which is poorly located. But then again, they're planning on eliminating the person "up front" too or they wouldn't have designed them that way. Be warned - first the conductor, then NOBODY ... only a question of how long that will take. The cars are coming equipped for NOBODY on board. :(

I wouldn't have lasted as a conductor on the pre-war stuff - I'm such a klutz, I would have went right down cracks, literally. Hell, it was even hard enough for me to stand on those steps on a stationery R9!

edf40wrjww2msgDetail:detailStr
It definitely required the acquisition of "sea legs" ... but it wasn't all that bad - if you ever get a chance to try stepping up from the storm door between two cars (not moving if that's more comfortable) you'll be able to note the U-shaped steel grab handles on the gate arms. They're designed for your kneecaps - when you step all the way up and grab both trigger handles, you'll find that your knees settle right in there standing on the plates. Like being in a mother's arms actually, and QUITE secure. Felt VERY safe once "in place" there.

And in the old days, you HAD to climb up and be out there to open the doors as SOON as the train stopped, and had to do your three car platform spotting while still there before stepping down. Meanwhile the train was doing better than 20 MPH when you did. I liked that a WHOLE lot better than sticking my head out of a porthole on the 32's. :)

Your right but the R160a's will be four car sets and there last nuber shoud be 8712, since there should be 400 of them. I guess that the TA dose not want any missing nembers there.

They'll probably take the SI R44's away and give us R46's

Right now it's one car in and nine more to go before the final touches (display signs, interior stickers, voice programming, etc.) are done and testing will begin as planned next month.

I do like all of the now, older rolling stock but they are really showing their age. I like the R142/A/3 and will probably feel the same way when those are taking out of service. I do hate how plain all of them look though. At least the Redbirds kept some color and personality in the system but now it's all silver. But I'm still glad that they're finally getting rid of them though.

I see they still haven't learned that the American flag should go UNDER the MTA logo on the car ends, not above it....

Incorrect. Proper United States flag display protocol states that the flag shall never be displayed in an inferior possession.

From what some one said here is that only the first five cars will be tested for now up and down the N line in Brooklyn. The other five will come in after about a mouth once these five get the bugs out of them and the rest can have the updates. Once the other five come in then the fince touches are done and the burn test next, and then the 30 day in Serivce test with the clock. Line unknow.
