PHOTOS: PCC II's returned to Route 15

Posted by chuchubob on Sun Apr 29 15:08:59 2012

Long term bustitution gave way to PCC II service Sunday between 63rd Street and Northern Liberties on April 29. Front Street to Westmoreland Loop will remain with stinkbuggies well into the future.

Is service to Westmoreland suspended "indefinitely" or will it be back a couple of years from now?

Nice shots and good news.

Now if only Brookville were inventive (and capitalized) enough to come up with a low-floor PCC lookalike; they'd take the market away from the overseas firms . . .

Service to Westmoreland is by bus until the trolley returns when the construction work is completed.

Great pictures! Great PCCs! When are streetcars going to be restored to the Germantown Route (the #23?) Every time I visit Philly I look in vain to see some sign of trolleys on that route. The tracks and wire appear to be maintained. Is there hope?

I hope so too. But the city is making no moves to do anything with that line right now, and of course PennDOT over the tracks of Route 56 and SEPTA removed the wires back in 2004 (a broken promise that nobody did anything about).

12th of Never. SEPTA is sometimes referred to as NCL reborn, they don't want any surface streetcar lines. Right now the Subway-Surface lines and the 15 are the only streetcar lines SEPTA has and 15 was put back due to City pressure, which is why SEPTA only sent 18 PCC cars to Brookville for rebuilding, which means if more than 3 cars are in the shops, buses take over.

SEPTA is sometimes referred to as NCL reborn

I'll buy that. NCL bought more PCCs than any other customer, and SEPTA is one of only four properties in the U.S. to still run them.

"NCL bought more PCCs than any other customer"

What's your PROFF? Offhand, I'd say the largest fleets of PCCs in the North America were Pittsburgh, Chicago, and Toronto, none of which were ever NCL properties. NCL is infamous for its practice of streetcar elimination.

I cannot believe NCL ever bought PCC cars outside of Los Angeles. Baltimore and Phildaelpia didn't get any new PCC cars after NCL got control.

I don't remember where I read it, but there were numbers to back it up. Chicago is an excellent example of busification not being unique to National City Lines, as is the elimination of streetcars in every other city not controlled by NCL.

And so did Pittsburgh's and Newark's and almost all European PCCs. But they're still PCCs. Nowhere does it say a PCC isn't a PCC if it uses pantographs. I don't like pantographs either but....

I see during their time away SEPTA updated the signage to make it digital like they did the Kawasaki trolleys done previously.
