It was spraypainted on the sidewalk in seattle:

"Work is Slavery"

It's all about finding the way to free yourself. Workers Paradise = slavery.

I don't blame the guy as I'd be crying the blues too.

But...hang in there and that light rail will bring the customers to you.

???????????????????????????????? The el was just torn down? What I said has to do with the El being torn down in 1977, not present time. It was a complete disaster to Jamaica business in 1977, something that they took 25 years to recover from.

What transit line was abandoned recently in Jamaica, what are you talking about?

No one is talking about now. We are talking about what happened after the El was removed in 1977. It was a horror for the business district of Jamaica, and talking away there vital foot traffic is something that they struggled with for almost 25 years to correct. I am happy for you over the last 6 years, and Jamaica is a different place for the last decade or so. But that's not what was being discussed.

I think that crack and gangs and loss of housing units in the surrounding residential neighborhoods had as much to do with Jamaica Avenue's decline as tearing down the el.

Of course. It all contributed. However, business was also down because it's vital link was destroyed.
Jamaica Ave was in trouble by the late 70's even before the loss of the el, but it didn't need to be plunged into total decline as the loss of the el caused, and surely didn't help.
