This is a bit suprising to me, because I didn't think Christie would lie about this. All the more ridiculous that he canceled it in the name of 'fiscal prudence'. I particularly like the line that he stated NJ taxpayers would be on the hook for 70 percent of the costs when it was really only 14. Haha. |

OOOOOK...why has this little tidbit been lost in the dust of the chase to paddle Christie:A spokesman for the governor, Michael Drewniak, said Mr. Christie’s statement of costs had included $775 million to build a new portal bridge, which was required as part of the project. The 70 percent state share, he said, included the costs that would have been paid for by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which is run by both states, as well as federal highway and stimulus funds earmarked for New Jersey. Counting those costs, which the report does not do, would put the state’s share at 65.5 percent. I'll tell you why: It may well be true so it needs to be! So we are left with is what is this story about... partisan hackery or what is (was) the real cost gonna be to the state? Given the NYT's history, I'll wager that if Drewniak's statement above is valid & the GAO is not including all the costs associated with the project & Christie is NOT exaggerating we will never hear about it. If it is the opposite we certainly will :o) |

The GAO report is rubbish. The number Christie used to justify the cancellation of the project was accepted by everyone as being realistic.Accepted by who? Who else had access to the existing planning and contract documents and performed an independent analysis to verify this? The article pretty clearly states 2 things: 1, that the estimate was never truly revised to reflect that it went from a low end of 8.7B and high end of 10B to a low end of 11B and high end of 14B. Christie's spokesperson does not deny this. 2, that the claim bandied about that NJ taxpayers would be on the hook for 70 percent of the cost of the project was patently false. The article states that the number was actually 14.4 percent. Christie's office does deny this claim, but he does so by saying that the 70 percent number also represents the money from PANYNJ (definitely not NJ taxpayers), and money from the feds for the project that could be expended on highways and roads. Christie himself isn't denying the report, so why should anyone else? |
