MTA delays reopening of Smith-9th Sts subway station until fall---riders & merchants fuming

The MTA has delayed the reopening of the Smith-9th St. subway station - leaving straphangers fuming and local businesses fearing it could deal their bottom lines a fatal blow.

The Carroll Gardens F and G train station - also the closest stop for many in transit-starved Red Hook - has been closed for a major renovation project since last June, and was slated to reopen this month - but now MTA officials say it won’t be open until fall due to construction complications.

“I really might have to close my whole business down because of this,” said Abdul Zaokari, owner of 9th Street Luncheonette below the subway station, who has already scaled his opening hours back four hours. "I've asked MTA to give me a break since I pay them for my rent, but they don't listen. And even worse, they don't realize how many customers used to come here in the morning, for lunch and even for a quick dinner. I've lost 80 percent of those customers.

"I really don't know how my business can survive until November when they say the subway will be finished,” he said.

MTA spokesman Charles Seaton said the opening was pushed back because of “especially challenging conditions” due to the age of the 78-year-old station, which has never been fixed up before, and its height, the tallest in the subway system.

“We regret the inconvenience,” he said.

Abdul Ali, 38, who works at 9th Street Deli, said business is down 75% since the station closed. "The postponement of the subway station is killing our business,” he said. "Our deli is barely surviving, but at least it's still alive. Shops all around here are closing since we don't have the kind of rushes we had in the past."

Many riders are forced to take longer walks or wait for the notoriously slow B61 bus.

"It's just ridiculous how this whole thing has gone down and how we continue to suffer and deal with this annoyance,” said William Maneggio; 45, of Carroll Gardens. “Now we’re paying for extra rides on any of the bus routes toward Smith St., all because they keep pushing the subway construction back.”

The $32 million renovations are part of the Culver Viaduct Rehabilitation Project, and will include new lights, a public address system, and fixed up platforms and stairs.

On a positive note, after the F/G gets shut down the 3/31-4/2 (5AM) weekend from Hoyt/Jay to 18th Ave., the trains will cross over to the local track entering 4th Ave. and will resume stopping @ 15th St./PPK and Ft. Hamilton Pky. stations. On at least one night beforehand (as power gets turned on) test trains will be ran, both 60' and 75' cars to check clearances and train to platform alignment, esp. @ 4th Ave. No doubt TGC 3 or 4 (or both) will visit too. The hardrail connection leaving Carroll St. and operation on 3 track to 4th Ave. will stay till Smith/9th is re-opened.

G trains will begin to relay at 18th Ave., as Church Ave. Yard will be taken out of service for switch/track work as well as work to install new signals/cables.

Finally, the E/G/M/7 transfer @ CSQ is also scheduled to re-open in time for the AM rush on 4/2 as Court Sq. station on the #7 should re-open. So far I have heard nothing about that not happening.

The contractors got a nice break with the mild winter weather this year, with both the viaduct work and the CSQ #7 work.

G trains will begin to relay at 18th Ave.

Maybe they should make that permanent for rush. That would prevent trains to be backed up because of fumigation of G trains at Church.

Then you need a supervisor and a crew facility at 18th Ave. since you are making it a terminal.

I don't know the rules about supervisors but can't the crew changes and facilities remain at Church? (Either inbound or outbound, whichever is more convenient operation wise)

Again, I'm thinking only about those hours the F is running 15tph. Other times, the G can turn at Church.

Sounds good! Sure beats the hell out of knocking out subway support pillars near 7th Ave!

i think they still need to fumigate before heading out to 18th ave, so no improvement there.

also rather than using a multiple track yard, now there is a single track (culver middle) for the relay.

better, this is not.

that wouldnt have been done in any case.
I love the way folks makes situation more complicated than it ever needs to to be.
there is NO ROOM OR SPACE at 7th for any kind of crossover.Period.

Its either 9TH ST or CHURCH..
