G train riders already feel like the rug is getting pulled out from under them — now they feel like the ceiling is coming down on top of them as well.

Water damage is causing paint to flake and a funky liquid to drip on straphangers at the Hoyt-Schermerhorn Street station, grossing out commuters who live in fear that the Metropolitan Transportation Authority will soon ax a beloved five-stop extension of the line that links North and Brownstone Brooklyns.

Dilapidated ceilings — marked by calcified grime, badly peeling paint, and rusted pillars — give the station’s two center platforms a horror-movie aesthetic, straphangers say.

“It has a grungy, dingy, and generally cryptic feeling,” said Gene Russianoff of the transit-advocacy group Straphangers Campaign.

The well-used is a major transfer point that links the so-called Brooklyn Local to the A and C trains. The station boasts six tracks, although the outer two aren’t in use — which is part of the reason why film crews often shoot in the station.

Hoyt-Schermerhorn played a big part in the movie “Coming to America” and Michael Jackson’s video “Bad,” but commuters shouldn’t expect a Hollywood-style makeover anytime soon.

An MTA spokesman said the station will receive a fresh coat of paint by 2015, but did not respond to specific requests for comment about the dripping ceiling.

Train advocates — who are fighting to save added G train stops in Kensington, Windsor Terrace, and Park Slope from elimination — had plenty to say.

“It’s unpleasant,” said Russianoff. “G train riders have a lot to complain about.”

The MTA added service to the only train that never suffers the injustice of entering Manhattan after it began a $257.5 million renovation of the Culver Viaduct. When work wraps up next winter, the agency is no longer obligated to keep running G trains at the Fourth Avenue–Ninth Street, Seventh Avenue, Prospect Park–15th Street, Fort Hamilton Parkway, and Church Avenue stations.

About on-par with Norwood - 205 Street and the "Chamber of Horrors" as far as water damage goes...

And a "fresh coat of paint" won't mean jack if the water issue isn't addressed; similar issues have marred recently rehabbed stations like 59-CC (uptown plat against the wall, north end) and Tremont Ave IND (and yes, I'm aware Tremont's fix was over a decade ago).

Hmmmmm, I guess Hoyt-Schermerhorn can join the growing list of crappy, peeling painted, mystery liquid-seeping stations on the system, like Broadway (G), Chambers Street (J), 205th Street (D), and 21st-Van Alst (G).

N/B Metropolitan had a BIG leak in one of the vent chambers a few years back; last time I was there (March 2011) it appeared to have been remedied; but the tiles are still somewhat stained as a result of this.

The G (GG in my day) was our "home" line in 1967 when we lived on the campus of Pratt Institute. The service then was cool and I recall it as a clean line but there was much of political unrest then. We also used the Myrtle Av. El. It was slow, rickety and ugly, but a beautiful ride in a time machine.

21st-Van Alst is a disgrace. The Magnificent Dungeon a/k/a Chambers of Horror has improved over the past 10 years - it used to have peeling paint and wires dangling from the ceiling in spots where old incandescent bulb fixtures used to be affixed. Those have been taken care of but the open abandoned side platform has gooey things on the floor that defy description.

Those gooey things are stalagmites forming from the drips from overhead. As for 21st-Van Alst - they need to dig BEHIND the wall on the southbound side (outside the station box itself) and fill and seal in order to keep the spring water out. Not a job for the squeamish. And very expensive for a marginal-use station.

Chambers Street has improved?????? Wow, I need to get down there sometime and see this for myself!!!

I very much recall, in great detail, many instances (when the brothel used to be upstairs) at 21st-Van Alst, when some of the locals after hours used to get their "relations" on right down on the platform!!! Adds to the "grandeur" of the station!!! :-D

To think some said working the G was boring!!! :-D

Yup they said the same thing about Metropolitan-Grand when there was rusty waterfalls down the tiles. Look at it now. Someday, when there are Bloomberg Buddy, tax exempt high rises above, it will be a nice station, say maybe in three years.

Yeah, just about every line has a few stations with pealing paint. I love how they make it sound like it's all their problem and A/C riders who also use the station don't have the same problem!
While they have a point about Smith-9th being an absurd terminal, this is just whining.

May I add though, that if this was an apartment, the government would be all over the landlord about the hazards of lead paint, pealing paint, and so forth. But of course if it's a government agency, "Oh we will deal with it by 2015".

Not only is South Ferry's problems ridiculous for a new station, but it's station design is one of the ugliest utilitarian stations in the system. Hopefully that's not what we are in for for the 2nd Ave subway.

Blaming government when it's obvious to even the most partisan of the left that what we have here is hipsters bitching about the paint and nobody else cares as much about it? LOL

So government responds to complainers ... if you don't when you work for an agency, beware of their "representatives" ... in most government work, nothing happens until some "leader" whines at upper management and DEMANDS satisfaction or the budget gets cut. That's why things like this happen.

Metropolitan-Grand was a different problem - a vent chamber was leaking rain water/storm water. That's been fixed (from above). 21-Van Alst is literally an underground spring coming in from behind the trackside wall (right through the station box). Much harder situation to remedy. All the grout in the world won't fix it either; you have to get behind the wall and divert the spring somehow.

I do know they did repaint the ceiling at the Chambers Street stop on the "J" and "Z" line back in either 2008 or 2009 but if you go there now, it looks like it needs a repaint again sadly.

A couple of separate water problems:
1) what's left of Collect Pond is seeping into the north end of the station

2) Waste lines coming from under the Municipal Building are corroding and leaking. This wastewater is permeating the middle of the station.

3) At the south end of the n/b abandoned platform there is a storm drain which, whenever it rains, pours water into the station.

Have you ever seen the federal regulation on lead paint? Not to mention New York City's stringent lead paint laws.

The photos speak for themselves. Again, if this was an apartment the city would be all over the landlord because of the pealing paint. But of course, it's "the government" here, and they say "We will deal with it by 2015". Again, typical government.

When they closed off the Brooklyn bound platforms at Canal and Bowery they should've reconfigured the tracks at Chambers St. If they do that they should wall off the side platform and the Brooklyn bound platform and use the center platform and the Broad St bound platform. I think a full restoration of Chambers is unnecessary as its days as a big terminal are long gone. I think just restoring the western half of the station is enough.

At the risk of being viciously flamed and ridiculed as I was way back when on Dave's site for taking the position that direct midtown service via Chrystie was not only highly desirable, but would be a huge success...and that it would be an atrocity if the connection was left dormant or even abandoned...

Chambers' "dormant" side must not be left to rot, nor should it be abandoned outright. Having seen what absolute stupidity it is to abandon usable ROW only to discover a decade or 2 later that it was a horrendous and costly mistake that cannot be undone, NYCT should at an absolute minimum rehabilitate and maintain the east platform and trackways. Sooner or later ridership patterns will make it sensible to have a terminal there. Take out the rails, deactivate the signals, and dim the lights to avoid those maintenance costs, but make certain the ROW remains intact and "just add rails" ready so it can be converted to turn trains coming from both the north and south in just however long it takes to reinstall the running infrastructure.

If it's left to go to seed or abandoned, mark my word: Within 20 years there will be a lot of hand wringing and finger-pointing when there's no way to handle additional service because it will cost way too much to rehab/rebuild the abandoned portion for revenue service. The folks in Planning surely can't be oblivious to the fact that when WTC reopens, Lower Manhattan is going to experience a renaissance.

Huh? Of course it's maintained. It leads to and from the Transit Museum, and the platforms are used for movie shoots. You can't turn any trains there without bringing a train all the way into Court Street though, unless the signals allow you to wrong-rail up Track B4 to the Lafayette Avenue spur track. Still couldn't stop there, though.
