Rohr built cars in the Bronx!

That's right! Did you guys ever know that the Bronx Zoo monorail cars were built by Rohr in 1977?

I know its a novelty ride and monorails are usually frowned upon in this site, but I think this system is very interesting, next to the Seattle Monorail and the Disneyland and World systems.

The Bronx Zoo system, known as the Wild Asia Monorail (formerly known Bengali Monorail), has six 9-car trains and one gas powered work car. The trains travel in a loop configuration on elevated, 1.6-mile steel beam guideway through the Wild Asia section of the zoo. The line has wayside signals, very similar to NYCT, in fact, the person who designed the signal system worked for the NYCTA signal dept. Each signal has the usual three aspects, green, yellow and red, that control a block. If a train runs a red signal, it automatically knocks of power to the entire block, stopping the train in emergency.

Line voltage for the monorail is 480VAC feed through bus bars along the guideway. Originally the AC power was transformed to DC to feed the SCR control system and the traction motors. Around 2007, the cars received a major overhaul, which replaced the DC equipment to a variable-frequency AC drives.

It is truly a nice underrated system in NYC.

I thought it was funny that they were built by Rohr. In particular because they were located in an establishment where one could go see lions... lions that Rohr!

They are stored right next to the 180th St. yard, I think one fence separates the NYCT property from the Zoo property.

I came within 1000 feet of the Rohr plant in Georgia while visiting an interlocking, but I didn't realize how close I was and failed to go check it out :-(

Thought the Rohr plant, where the manufactured transit equipment, was located in California?

I agree; the Wild Asia (Bengali Express!) monorail is indeed a nice system. I remember riding many times both before and after the overhaul.

If I remember correctly, the monorail yard has five tracks/beams under a shed and one or two maintenance/shop tracks/beams.

Yes, in Chula Vista, within walking distance of a San Diego Trolley station. (I interviewed for a job there some years ago, without the desired result.)

I know for certain that Rohr build the WMATA series 1000 cars in Winder, GA, but I don't know about the BART A cars.
