One person is dead and another is being sought by police after a fight on a subway train spilled onto the platform and ended up on the tracks. It was a frightening incident in front of hundreds of witnesses at the Bedford Avenue train station in Brooklyn at around 10 p.m. Friday. Police say a confrontation following a verbal dispute between two men on the L train spilled onto the platform when the train stopped and then escalated into a full-blown fight. Both men fell onto the tracks, but one was able to climb back to safety and flee the scene. The other man however, remained on the tracks and was hit by an oncoming train. Police closed the subway station for several hours as crime scene investigators gathered more information about how the incident happened. “There was a woman kneeling beside [the victim] and she was doing the best she could,” one witness said. Police have identified the victim as 20-year-old Joshua Basin of Howard Beach. Investigators are calling his death a homicide and say they are looking for a suspect, a white male in his early 30s. So far, no one has been arrested. The investigation is still ongoing. Anyone with information is urged to call the authorities. ---http://newyork.cbslocal.com/2012/03/24/man-struck-killed-by-oncoming-train-at-bedford-avenue-station/ A man died after he was pinned between a subway car and the platform at the Bedford Avenue L train station in Brooklyn last night, sources said. Joshua Basin, 20, was taken to Bellevue Hospital in critical condition and later died, cops said. Police are sill investigating the incident, but witnesses said the Howard Beach, Queens man was crushed by the train after he got into a fight with another man and they both fell onto the tracks. As the train pulled into the station a man wearing a black fleece said, “It’s showtime” and then punched Basin in the face as the doors opened, a witness said. The two men fought and fell onto the tracks, and the victim was hit while trying to climb out when a train approached. “When I looked he was trying to pull himself out, but there wasn’t enough time,” said the witness who watched the fight. Police are still looking for the other participant in the fight -- described as a white male in his early 30s. --- http://www.nypost.com/p/news/local/crushed_by_train_6n305RpZWFFQGzJQAzx5gI#ixzz1q2eZ7MoX |

College student killed by (L) train after drunken man attacked him & pushed him onto tracks |

Joshua Basin Victim's mother, Zena Basin A LaGuardia Community College student was killed by a Brooklyn subway train Friday, after a boozed-up straphanger started a fight and the the tussle spilled onto the tracks. Joshua Basin, 20, was riding an eastbound L train to go to his girlfriend's house in Long Island when a drunken man began berating him and his two friends before the Bedford Ave. stop in Williamsburg, sources and a friend said. When the train stopped, Basin and his pals got out of the train - but the suspect attacked him on the platform about 10 p.m., cops and family said. "There was some kind of drunk person," said Basin's heartbroken mother, Zena Basin. "The guy was fighting with him. The guy kept coming at him and they both fell." As Basin tried to defend himself, the pair dropped to the tracks on the opposite side - just as a Manhattan-bound train came barreling into the station, cops sources and family said. The suspect, believed to be a white man in his early 30s, climbed back onto the platform and ran away. But Basin couldn't manage to pull himself out in time and was struck by the train, cops and his mother said. "He ran away," the weeping mother said of the suspect. "He left my son dead." Basin was rushed to Bellevue Hospital, but he could not be saved. His devastated mother clutched a picture of her only child at the family's Howard Beach, Queens, home as tears welled in her eyes. "My only son," she said. "I need to find out why anyone would do this to my loving son." She said Joshua was born a twin, but the only to survive. She said the junior psychology major was planning a night out with friends when the tragic altercation sparked on the train. "He wasn't a fighter," she said. "He would never hurt anyone. He was a good boy." Cops were still hunting for the suspect. Investigators were poring over surveillance video at the station, but have not yet found any footage of the suspect, a source said. "Whoever did this to my son needs to turn himself in," the mother said. "I need to find out why he did that to my son." ---http://www.nydailynews.com/new-york/brooklyn/college-student-killed-train-fight-drunk-man-spilled-tracks-article-1.1050252#ixzz1q2yYvPo2 |

All NY City Subway trains are designated as either northbound or Southbound even if they travel east and west. On the L train, 14st & 8th Ave is the northern terminal hence a train heading into Manhattan would be designated as northbound. |

Timetable direction in NYCT is "NORTH" or "SOUTH", regardless of geographical orientation. It's tricky, though, because some "SOUTH" terminals, like Metropolitan Avenue on the (M), and Mott Ave/Far Rock on the (A) have trains arriving facing geographically north. Interestingly, between Myrtle Avenue and Essex Street on the (J)/(M)/(Z), northbound (Jamaica-bound) (J) and (Z) trains share the same track as southbound (M) trains. |

I will say it again...the platform at Bedford is a between the tracks platform (is that called an island platform?). It is too narrow. No matter what people say, it is time to begin constructing fences between the platforms and the tracks with moval gates to prevent this sort of thing from happening. It is not prohibitively expensive as would be full sized barriers a la the air train. I was in Paris this past summer riding the #1 line and the gates are in. Are they aesthetically pleasant. No. Do they do the job? Yes.But then again there is this culture of no can do that has pervaded the NYC Transit system for decades. Count down timers? No, not necessary. A modern smart card fare collection system? No, not necessary tokens or an outdated metrocard system will do. Now simple protectie gates? I can name dozens of platforms that are simply too narrow where it wouldn't take a big outlay to do. No, they won't protect against somebody intent on doing themselveds in jumpng over them (I know that would be prohibitively expensive) but simple chain fences with doors that open when train arrives in the station (and they don't have to coincide with the doors of the train...they are automatically opened when the train enters the station and closed when the doors close. Don't tell me they're not practica. OF course they're pracdtical and necessary. |

Well a place to start would be the L line as they all ue the same equipment but my suggestions does not mean the gates have to line up...when the train arrives the gates open and if you have to walk a couple of feet to the open door, that's fine. Of course since they are not floor to ceiling, they can be circumvented but most people wouldn't want to and if somebody really wants to do themselves in, I agree it would hardly be a deterrent. But it would prfevent accidents such as what happened here especially when some of he platforms, one would have to agree, are simply too narrow for the 21st century. |

How many passengers know which direction is n/b for the E and F in Queens? The n/b E is actually going south at Jamaica-Van Wyck as is the n/b F at Briarwood-Van Wyck They usually do say Jamaica bound and Manhattan bound in these alerts. As mentioned more than once in earlier posts, the BMT considered all Manhattan bound service as North. On the former BMT Eastern Division, J track (J/Z Line) North ends at the geographic south end of the Chamber Street station where it meet the North end of "R" Nassau tracks. J1 becomes R1, and R1 becomes J1. The two center tracks at Chmabers (J4&3), become R3&4 then merge into a single tail track R3/4.At this rail junction the two track chaining codes end at a common North termination point, yet are geographically opposite each other. All former eastern division odd numbered tracks in Brooklyn and Queens are considered South, even numbers towards operating North (Wayside signals will display track chaining codes). The Archer Avenue terminal chaining codes show the upper level IND tracks with codes D2A/D1A (North Terminal), and the BMT tracks located on the lower level as J1/J2 (South Terminal). Interesting note. The Liberty Avenue Elevated line continues to use the former BMT eastern division chaining code scheme (K1/K2), but happens to fall into the correct North/South chaining convention as a result of that line being connected to the IND Fulton Street line. |
