Someone said a few weeks ago that 2 cars are in CI getting worked over and will get NTT-style interior paint job. What is the progress on this project ?

It's funny how what someone would like to see (R32's getting a NTT interoir style paint job) becomes fact on SubChat.

The only cosmetic thing you'll see is the glass will be changed. No doubt it will be protected with the mylar sheet.

R32 trucks are being rebuilt, with some asbestos abatement, and reinforcement of the upper door frames under the car roof AC units just to name a few. Unfortunately the cars will not receive e-cam conversion.

One initial thought was to repaint the car interiors in a similar scheme as the R160's, but that this idea has been dropped as a cost saving measure to the remaining 45 year old equipment.

The interior paint job to match the interior colors of NTT cars was hear-say rumor at CIYD last fall. I didn't notice any glass replacement activity as of last Friday.

The tan is looking rather dreary and is very 1980's.
I was on one last week with the paint on some interior panels having pealed off revealing rust. Someone is going to have to go around with a paint brush.

The total number of cars to be SMS'd sits with Car Equipment Engineering. From informal conversation/hear-say rumor, about twenty R32's will be scrapped due to structural and other mechanical conditions that are too costly to re-mediate in the current budget environment.

Based on the need to meet service requirements with spare equipment, R32's designated as museum assets may be included in the SMS-Lite program to make service numbers. I guess NYCTM will have to wait to receive its museum cars some time after 2017.

That pair is a Phase II. Different brakes. All the Phase II's are retired.

I guess that means the Fresh Pond ones are for parts, then scrap.
What I meant was how many are in CI right now ?

Somebody's head should roll for dissing all the R44's. They should have been able to cherry-pick 50 - 60 to get rid of the bad R32's and all the R42's.

Nobody's head is going to roll for "dissing" the R44's. The decision to retire them was made at the highest levels of NYCT management.

The decision to store those R32's at FP Yard was made before there was a budget created to SMS the fleet. Now that there is one, the higher ups will decide if these will be SMS'ed as well.

Are the SMS'ed one running in solid trains?

Has the glass been replaced?

Has there been interior re-painting.

Not suprised about the deteriorating of the brakes.

Darn. Yes it is cheaper to not repaint, but repainting the interior would vastly improve customer perception of the cars. Yes, structural reinforcement and rebuilt trucks are important, but regular passengers do not notice this. Some *did* notice the floor replacement and they would definitely notice a new paint job.

Repaint the interior, replace the end LCD's with LEDs, and they're ready to go for another 45 years :).

Let's not get carried away with the repainting.

Making the seats' paint job look like the R160's is overkill and an unnecessary expense. R160 like painted seats would give the vandals a new blackboard. They'll be scratched up in no time and you'll see the (current) gray re-appear. Budgets rule. Hopefully the cars with interior rust issues will be remedied, along with painting of the walls.

Customers' perception (not those of the railfan) is only improved with relaibility of the cars and most importantly resolution of the air conditioning issues with these cars, which has been a big problem since the cars returned from GOH.

The R-32 seats do not have to be repainted. All that is necessary is to strip the gray paint off the seats to reveal the original blue.

The brakes may be different in that they are NYAB as opposed to WABCO, but when they were on the road, they did run in mixed trains with Phase Is. Mainline IRT redbirds also had both WABCO and NYAB brake systems and both ran together in mixed trains.

There is a neutra-rust chemical in a plastic bottle that you buy at auto parts stores. It does in fact stop the rust, turns the surface black after a day, then you use body filer to smooth the rough area over. I am sure there is a commercial grade of that stuff.

All we can hope for is that they clean up the light fixtures and get new fluorescent light tubes. That will not break the bank.

Theres 44s @ Pitkin, CIY, Concourse, & 207, some stripped a bit, some seem in shape. The reason I heard they're not moving them is weak frames in the body.
