Polish train wreck |
|
|
Posted by SelkirkTMO on Sun Mar 4 06:15:43 2012 One of my guys was on the train and survived ... sent some pictures.http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-17248735 His personal account: - locomotive - 2 wagons from 1st class - 1 restaurant wagon - 2 wagons from 2nd class Locomotive + 2 first class wagons are wasted, and many ppl died there. His pics (he was in second class because tickets were sold out for first class ... both first class cars were destroyed and had the fatalities. Needless to say, he's quite happy he survived) ... ![]()

XDFrom what I can gather it sounds like a single track dispatching problem as opposed to a passed signal. |

Yeah, he hit church as soon as he got to the village. :)Shook up badly, treated for a concussion, but otherwise all in one piece. Vaclev is one of our KNOS coders. Glad we didn't lose him. |

He said that they were wrong-railing because there was a track crew out on the other one. Not sure since he's still not home yet, but I believe they're still using the blue and white signals over there. Never could figure out the logic of visibility for blue/white signalling ... |

I believe the origin of PRR PL signals came after a red/green misread in foul weather. B&O. N&W, WAB, C&A, SIRT all adopted various forms of Color Position Light systems for extra legibilty. Back when these systems were deployed RRs were not as rigorous in medical pre employment as later. (In the 60s IC would not even take an application from anyone w/glasses for train service) |

Not sure ... my only awareness of the Polish signalling system dates back to the Mechanik train simulator. At that time I asked someone over there if the blue/white signals were accurate and they said "da" ... didn't ask for any further details ... |

Most of Poland's signaling is either whatever the Soviet color light standard was or the former German style mechanical system where re-signaling had not yet taken place. |

Given that this is the intercity line north out of Krakow, I would imagine whatever signalling existed would be more modern than other lines. Haven't heard from Vaclev yet today, and he's not a train buff, but will ask when I hear from him ... |

I have no idea of the combine crash speed, but compare this to the VIA Rail wreck last week in which an LRC car hit a building and they were going 67MPH. It probably totalled it, but just a few injuries were very serious, nothing like this. |

If anybody had occupied the first Amcoach, they'd all be dead. |

I assume both trains were dumped before they met and crush speed was a lot lower ... the damage was pretty severe though. 350 souls on board, 16 dead so far and a lot of injuries. The locomotives were obliterated. |
