Perhaps SHE is the voice of the F train?!

Bloomberg Market Minute Report

This recording from Bloomberg Radio features Kathleen Campion. Her voice sounds very similar to the faster/more pleasing voice on the F train. She sounds very similar to Dianne Thompson (who we all know/fall asleep to on the 7th/Lenox line).

Many people online/on the forums have already credited the F train announcements to Dianne Thompson by default from her years on the 2, but perhaps it's really Kathleen Campion who is announcing these more pleasant announcements.

We probably will never know since an official report will probably never be made (unlike when the NTTs were new in 2000 when the voices were featured in a news article), but it's pretty interesting to hear the similarity between the two voices. I have heard Dianne Thompson on Bloomberg radio in the past and I don't doubt that she is capable of recording "faster, clearer announcements" either. I just think Kathleen Campion's delivery on radio sounds very similar to the delivery on the F train announcements. (Especially on the Jamaica-bound trains in Queens).

The final word would have to come from 'heypaul"

"heypaul" is renowned for his intimate with the sultry "F" train of yore.

Campion's voice seems a bit too high to be the one on the announcements. I'm not entirely convinced. The only place I hear a similarity is in the intro.

I say this because I read something where Thompson requested specifically to do the A and C and the A, C and F share the same voice.

Obviously, she no longer works for Bloomberg Radio. According to her LinkedIn profile, she, under the name Dianne Stanciel, currently hosts a blog catered towards the Baby Boomers generation. At least that's what my research led to.

I think I changed my opinion. I rode an F via the E line, and the "50th Street" announcement reeked of Dianne Thompson (since it sounded like a clearer version of the 2 local recording).

I don't think that Campion didn't record the F train, at least not specifically--but I do think that Campion offers her voice on some of the newer announcements. Such as "Jay Street-Metrotech", "Transfer is available to the M15 Select Bus Service", etc. Since Thompson no longer works for Bloomberg, I suppose Campion must be the new "similar" voice.

Here's another recording featuring Campion. Interview with Patrice Regnier by Kathleen Campion

I can very well hear "Jay Street-Metrotech", etc. in her tone and tempo.

The vast majority of the announcements on that clip are Kathleen Campion, but there are also some Dianne Thompson, and I believe Catherine Cowdery clips, as well. Plus, of course, Charlie "Please Stand Clear of the Closing Doors" Pellet.

I was the recording engineer for a lot of the subway announcements when I was senior radio engineer at Bloomberg. We used Dianne, Catherine, Kathleen, Charlie and Jessica Ettinger on most of the recordings, and as requested by the MTA, we tried to isolate them by line, so that no one's voice was heard on more than one line per division. The idea was that by keeping voices isolated on a single line per division, there would be less confusion. If that policy continued following my departcher I don't know. We started with the new R142 (ff) IRT cars, since they were delivered first; and later did the R143(ff) BMT/IND cars after they were delivered.

For the techies out there: the recordings were made in a small voice studio using AKG 414C condenser microphones and Air Corps Voice Processors feeding a Wheatstone A-500 console. The original recordings were made digitally direct to hard drive and edited in the digital domain using Syntrillium's "Cool Edit Pro" (now Adobe Audition). This was still fairly new technology in the late 90s. The resulting WAV files were then copied to Compact Discs, and were delivered to the MTA as WAV files on CD to keep the audio quality as high as possible. How the MTA transferred the files to the subway cars PA system I do not know. I'm not sure if they kept them as WAV files or used some other formats. I'm going to guess and say they kept the WAV files intact because they were being very particular about the quality of the recordings.

I was told by MTA people that this was because of the complaints about the unintelligibility of a lot of subway station PA announcements. They didn't want the same complaints about the in-car announcements.

In any event, to bring this back on topic, to try and clear things up, I contacted Dianne tonight by email and she should be able to clear a lot of this up. I'll let you know what I find out.

Jessica Ettinger recorded the (4)(5) and (6). (Although Melissa Kleiner originally recorded the (5), and then was removed.)

Dianne Thompson recorded the (1)(2) and (3).

It's my assumption that Catherine Cowdery recorded the (7) and 42nd Street Shuttle. Sounds like her, despite the old sound files.

Thanks for the background on this.

Personally, I think they should have chosen ONE person to do the announcements (Jessica Ettinger Gottesman is my favorite of the female voices). The mashups that have resulted in some places, especially now that Jessica is no longer in the market, sound horrendous.

Mr. 600vdc, you've just provided more information than we probably had ever hoped to receive. Thank you so much.

I'm a Train Operator for the New York City Subway, with a side interest in radio and voice acting, so I always enjoy playing "guess the voice".

Here's where we stand right now....

For years, we've known this much:

Melissa Kleiner: (5) (removed in a later update)
Jessica Ettinger: (4)(5)(6) (moved out west, no longer records)
Dianne Thompson: (1)(2)(3)(9) (status unknown; possibly still recording?)
Catherine Cowdery: (B)(D)(E)(G)(J)(L)(M)(N)(Q)(R)(V)(W)(Z) (had been recording newer transfer updates for a while, but has since disappeared; status unknown)
Charlie Pellett: Many miscellaneous announcements. Always available.

I also suspect that Cowdery recorded the (7) and 42nd Street (S) Shuttle, but I can't be 100% sure. I once heard another name get thrown out there, but I forgot who it was.

Originally on the R-142 cars, Pellett provided all of the transfer announcements, using what I presume to be a master file of him saying every letter and number, and then Transit (or a third party) editing together what they needed at the time (as our service is constantly evolving). In a later update around 2002/2003 or so, Ettinger and Thompson came in and recorded a bunch of transfer announcements for their respective lines. These new transfers were used mainly to reflect new rush hour service patterns, while many of the Pellett transfers remained. However, with Ettinger (and possibly Thompson) out of the picture, Transit has gone back to splicing together Pellett transfers these days when needed.

With the R-160 cars, however, Cowdery recorded her own transfers for each station, and interestingly enough, even apparently recorded the *same station name* multiple times for different lines, rather than Transit reusing just one file. When updates were needed, Cowdery rerecorded transfers for a while, but hasn't lately.

The big question we've been pondering for a long while now is who is voicing the (A)(C)(F), Franklin Avenue (S) Shuttle, and Rockaway Park (S) Shuttle trains on the R-160 cars. For the longest time we had assumed it was Thompson. It sounded a *bit* like her, and we had once read an interview where she admitted she voiced the (1)(2)(3) and (9), and said she someday hoped to voice the (A), which I think was her home line at the time. But then a few months ago, someone discovered a sound byte of Kathleen Campion reading some news, and holy moly, she sounded like that voice from the R-160!

This mystery voice, much like Cowdery, recorded transfers for her respective lines, but Transit in recent years has stopped caring about any sort of voice consistency on the announcements, and has begun mixing together Cowdery and mystery-voice into the same sentence at times. "Mystery-voice" has solely been recording the latest transfers and new station names for at least the past year or so, although Pellett has also recently recorded newer transfer announcements, where splicing wasn't enough.

I tried to find information on Kathleen Campion. All I could really find was a Bloomberg Businessweek page, mentioning that Campion was Executive Vice President of Bloomberg L.P. Sounds like a really high-up position to still be recording subway announcements, unless she personally enjoys doing them.

Anyway, I turned this into an essay, didn't I? If there's anything else you can tell us about your time involved with our subways, that would be wonderful. There are many railfans out there who create high-quality recordings of announcements for scrap-booking, or for use in train simulation games, and they post them on YouTube. I'm sure they could link to a few if you wanted to hear how our latest R-160 announcements were coming along (and whether we're hearing Thompson or Campion).

In fact, starting around 3:16 into this video are some very old cell-phone recordings of the (7) line announcements, which have not yet been used in passenger service (new trains haven't yet arrived on the (7) line). Any idea who this is?

"I did the 7th Ave line and the last time I was there last year, my voice was still there. It was the number 1, 2 and 3... Jessica did the Lexington Ave line and it is Catherine on the F.

I really appreciate the compliments."

I hope Dianne's comments were able to clear up some of the questions you had about who voiced what.
