Fasttrack on the 6th Ave B/D/F/M - - a retro reroute

On the week of 2/27 through 3/2 where NYCT will perform FastTrack on the 6th Ave line between 59th Street/CC and West 4th Street - - the Q will be extended to 21st Street-Queensbridge to cover for the F (possibly rerouted via. 53rd tube and E towards WTC) and will not run to Astoria after 10 PM.

This should be a very interesting week ahead, call it the retro Q from the late 1980s.

If this is correct, a rare (recently at least) trip through the Broadway - 63rd St connection. (I used to like the RFW through there, when it was available -- a moderate speed, seemingly never-ending curve).

I think they will have to use the Broadway-63rd St. one way or another connection during the 6th Ave. FastTrack, since the 6th Ave. line is to be closed, but the 63rd St. line isn't.

Or maybe not. The announcements say the 6th Ave. line is to be closed between 59 St.-Columbus Circle and W. 4th St. Possibly, the F could run from Queens to 57th St.-6th Ave., relay just south of the station, and return to Queens.

I expect that D trains from the Bronx would switch to the local track at 59th St., run down the 8th Ave. local, then switch back to 6th Ave. at W. 4th St. and run down the CULVER line, replacing the F. (That's a real "retro" operation.)

Meanwhile, West End D trains from Brooklyn would run their normal route to Broadway-Lafayette, discharge their passengers, and relay north of the station (reversing direction on the northbound express track and switching to the southbound track on the single crossover switch between those tracks).

The only problem would be one of nomenclature, since the Culver and West End services would both be designated "D" trains. Maybe they could assign some other letter to the West End service, or maybe just rely on station announcements to distinguish them.

What I'd expect is the Q terminates at Times Square and the R runs all night to 71st Avenue via 63rd Street after 11pm. F runs via the E to West 4th Street, the A will run express from 125 to Canal Street in Both Directions and the D will run in 2 sections. between 2nd Avenue and 205 Street via 8th Avenue and between West 4th and Stillwell.

They won't turn the F at 57th. They won't rename the D. What good would either of these do? 57/6th will likely be closed too. Q will run to 21st as mentioned

They'll probably turn the Bronx D at 2nd Ave, and the Brooklyn D at Bway Lafayette. This will allow easy transfer. Alternatively, they'll just run the D to Times Square from Brooklyn, with transfer at 42nd.

F will run via 53rd & 8th Ave.

I don't think it'll be any more complicated than that.

I once had someone over at my house who's only job was to come up with routes and re-routes. I couldn't imagine it was a full time job. SHE seemed too young (and from out-of-town) to be doing this in any case.

It is interesting the way they are posted. The service change notes for the A, C, and Q mention the changes to the D and F in passing, but there are no changes posted for the D and F discussing these.

The changes for next week list the FastTrack changes on the 1/2/3, so I'm wondering why the D/F FastTrack changes are not directly listed.

But here's my speculation.

Since the 6th Avenue shutdown only effects the portion of the line between Columbus Circle and 57th/6th to West 4th Lower, here's my speculation.

A trains will run express overnight between 145th and Canal. Passengers for CPW local stops can transfer to the D at 145th Street.

B and C service will end early.

D trains will operate between 205th Street and Coney Island via 8th Avenue/CPW Local, Delancey Street station, and Culver line. Passengers for West End line stations can transfer to the J at Delancey Street.

F trains will operate between 179th Street and 2nd Avenue via 8th Avenue local. Passengers for Culver Line stops can transfer to the D anywhere between 50th Street/8th Avenue and 2nd Avenue.

J trains replace the D in South Brooklyn, running between Jamaica Center and Coney Island via West End. Passengers traveling to the Bronx may transfer to the D at Essex Street.

M shuttle service between Metropolitan and Myrtle/Broadway begins early. Passengers can use J, D, and E trains for continuing service.

Q trains extended to 21st-Queensbridge. Passengers for continuing service to Jamaica may take the E or F at Times Square, or use the walking transfer at Lexington/63rd to the 4 or 6 trains, taking that to 51st Street for E and F service.

A shuttle train will operate between the Broadway-Lafayette and Grand/Chrystie stations.

D, E, and F trains may run at reduced frequencies between 2200 and 2400 to alleviate congestion on the 8th Avenue local tracks between 50th Street and West 4th Street. E trains will continue to run local on 8th Avenue in order to serve the Spring Street station.

Based on the partial details which are, I now see, posted on the MTA's service changes web pages, it looks like zac has it right. In addition, the A will run express from 145 St. to Canal St., while the D runs local. So no crossovers between local and express at 59th St., except that during the first hour when the C is still running, it will be express south of 59th St.

While it seems that Zac is right, I don't feel like this is the best option. I think someone else posted this, I'd rather see this routing instead:

A: Express all night
B: Ends early
C: Express after closure starts
D: 205 to 2nd Avenue via CPW Local and CI to W4
E: Parsons-Archer to Whitehall via 63rd and Broadway
F: 179th to CI via 53rd and 8th Ave
M: Ends early
Spring & WTC closed (or run the A local to stop at Spring, I'm not looking at a track map at the moment to see how feasible this is, but at late night headways, I don't see why the D and A can't share the local track)

The reason I prefer this routing, even though it takes the E off its regular route on 8th Avenue, is it gives both 53rd Street and 63rd Street through service, and gives the stations along Broadway a direct train to Queens, since those stations are closer to 6th Avenue for the most part than the 8th Avenue stations.

It's too bad the (D) uses 75 footers, or I would have the (D) do what it did in the early 1980s, run to Essex and then change direction there to run on the Nassau Street line, running either short trains (five 60-foot cars), making it so only the first five cars stop open doors on the Nassau line stations OR not stopping at the Nassau Stations except Essex since there, half the car could open upon first coming into the station and the other half can open on re-entry after changing directions at the start of the Willy B (in the latter scenario, after Broadway-Lafayette or Essex, the next stop would be the Court Street (R) station).

They seem to be trying to keep the rerouted routes about as long as the regular routes would be. For example, the 5 runs all night for the 7th Avenue IRT shutdown and runs to 241st in the Bronx, and I'm assuming it gets the regular 2 train crews. My routings keep the E and Q at their normal lengths more or less, but to run the E via 63rd, the Q can't terminate at 57th. The other option would be to extend the Q to Parsons-Archer and to suspend the E for the nighttime period.

My idea is simple:
Run two services-
1-205th-8th ave local-Houston-Culver-CI
2-179th-63rd-Broadway-West end-CI

I dunno what would be the best to call these- Either D and F, or perhaps use alternate designations such as K and W. If you wanted to really approximate current services, change designation between D and F midway through on both routes, like they used to do with the F/Q during late nights.

Either way, you could run pretty much all other service normally, which would certainly be a plus in my mind. Also, I think line run times would be reasonably close to what they normally are, so you might not need to mess with crews that much.

My solution:

(M) runs all night via 8th Avenue and replaces the (E) to Parsons-Archer (WTC platform closed). There would be no (E) service at all.

(F) runs with the (A) to Jay Street, picking up the slack lost by the (E) since it would be running almost all of the (E)'s full route with the exception of the Parsons-Archer segment and the WTC terminal station, which would be closed with passengers asked to walk up to the (A) platform for (A) and (F) service.

(D) replaces the (F) through the Rutgers Tunnel and runs via Culver to Coney Island in both directions.

(J) is extended to Coney Island and replaces the (D) via the West End line.

That to me can work.

Euclid? I guess the C would be annulled during this, then.

(F) would still be to Coney Island.

It would re-join its regular route at Jay Street and go with the (D) to Coney Island.

(C) would run as it normally does.

The (M) doesn't run nights anyway in Manhattan, and they had a weird way of showing the (Q) connecting from 63rd St. to 57th St-7th Av.

Unless there is some reason that the MTA doesn't want to use the A/B tracks of the Manny B, or the exp tks immediately N/O Bway/Laf, there should be no reason why the Bkln portion of the D can't terminate at Bway/Laf and relay back to Bkln on the N/B exp tk. Does the GO indicate that? It's obvious that the lcl tks on Houston are still in service as far as the interlocking S/O W4 St so what is the status of the express tracks in that area?

Things I would have done differently:

There would have been no (E) service at all, with the (M) running all night via 8th Avenue and extended along QB to replace the (E) to Parsons-Archer (WTC platform would be closed). (M) also would have picked up a scheduled Queens G.O. the (E) has.

(A) would have been local FastTrack ((C) ends early) with WTC passengers asked to walk to/from the (A) platform at Chambers for service.

(D) would have run to 2nd Avenue via the (C) and then (F). If car availability from other lines allowed it (or an exception to the normal no-75 foot Eastern Division car rule made for FastTrack with (D)s running 300-foot trains), the (D) would have instead terminated at Essex to allow for a transfer to the (J) there.

(J) would have been extended to 9th Avenue Brooklyn to replace the (D) to that point.

That to me could have worked better and given Broadway-Brooklyn riders added service to Manhattan along the (M) for those nights since from West 4th on it would have replaced the (E).

I guess they will be doing work on the 6th Ave. express tracks right through Grand St., maybe even on the north side Manhattan Bridge tracks. Otherwise, the Brooklyn D could run to Broadway-Lafayette rather than Whitehall St.

It's too bad the connection is broken between 21 St.-Queensbridge and Roosevelt Ave., but I guess it had to be. Nice to see the shuttle bus from Grand St. stopping at both B'way-Lafayette and Canal St., though.

For one thing, they left out a lot of stations in lower Manhattan, like Brooklyn Bridge, Wall St., and Bowling Green on the 4/5, Canal and Spring Sts. on the A/C/E, and everything south of 14 St., except Fulton St. and South Ferry, on the 1/2/3. Maybe that was supposed to reduce "clutter", but it is disconcerting.

My guess would be they want to do work on the new entrance at the south end of Bway-Laf that straddles the exp track and some work at Grand.

Interesting that they are turning the D at Whitehall.

Well, the other alternative would be to turn the D at Pacific St but by going to Whl, D passengers can change for IND services at Jay/Metrotech, And have additional transfer opportunities to the IRT at Court St and Whitehall. There would probably be no point to bringing the D further into midtown since there is no opportunity to transfer to 6 Av services at 34 St as is the case when the Manny B is shut down for inspections periodically.
