"On December 22, 2011, a tunnel boring machine (TBM) broke through the end of tunnel "A" in Long Island City. This milestone is a significant one in MTA Capital Construction's East Side Access project, an effort that will bring MTA Long Island Rail Road trains into Grand Central for the first time."

This is parallel to the Northeast Corridor in Sunnyside Yard.

LIRR trains will depart from the NEC, then take this tunnel under Sunnyside Yard to the existing 63rd Street Tunnel. Once in Manhattan, trains turn the corner under Park Ave and the single track fans out to 4 on the upper level and 4 on the lower level at the station.

Because the 63rd Street tunnel is only two tracks, there will only be one track in each direction.

They are working on both ends of the 63rd Street Tunnel right now. TBMs are working in Queens, and miners are working in Manhattan on the station shell.

Ther is no bottle neck in the existing tunnel. One track each way is more than enough to move the trains before they get to the Wyes and head to the two caverns.

The bottle necks are the interlocking in Queens (3 + yard to 1) and back out from the caverns to one track, so there is no need during normal operations.

No it's not 3 to 1.

There are 3 main tracks departing from NEC towards to 63rd Street Tunnel. Approaching the 63rd Street Tunnel, those tracks merge into two. At approximately the same point, two yard leads merge.

So it's either 3 to 2 or 5 to 2 depending on if you are counting the non-revenue yard tracks.

It appears that the middle of the three tracks will be mostly used by Port Washington Branch trains because of the configuration of Harold Interlocking and the desire to keep Amtrak and LIRR trains separate.

All that money blown, and they coulda used the TBM to build a "Union Station" downtown instead for maybe the same amount of money.

There is only one yard lead track, and there will not be trains coming from the Mid-day Storage Yard during the morning rush, so more accurate is 2 into 1 for GCT bound morning service.

GCT bound Port Washington service would be exclusive to the A Tunnel along the west side of the mainline during normal operations.

Typical poor planning although the MTA can't be blamed for this one since the tunnel was planned long before the creation of the MTA.

At that time, Double Decker or Multi Levels were being phased out in favor of three X two seating.

At least this will free up space at Penn for more direct trains to Montauk, Port Jefferson, though my fantasy of a Cannonball from Grand Central to Montauk won't come into fruition.

I wish there'd be one weekend train using Amfleet or maybe ACES type of coaches with better seats for the Montauk runs. Charge Amtrak like prices on it. I'd bet it would still be popular.
