R-188s comin' to Corona

Posted by G1Ravage on Thu Jan 19 02:40:43 2012

Spy satellites indicate that one of the five-car converted R-188 units at Pitkin Yard is being transferred to Corona Yard this morning, and the other five cars should follow tomorrow.

I have no idea yet as to what the cars will be doing at Corona. They definitely won't be operating in passenger service any time soon, as none of the road Train Operators are qualified yet, nor do we have an 11th car. But you may get some boardwalk photo ops.

Training for shop workers? Or maybe just early testing.

Someone already did, and posted the work to Wikipedia.

I wonder what the routing was to get them from Pitkin to Corona.
I imagine some fancy dancing was involved.

Pitkin to W4 lower level (Xover at Jay St), change ends, W4 to Pacific, change ends, Manny B & Bway sub to Qns Plz, Xover to Corona.

Thanks for the info.
I wonder why they cant go from Pitkin to Queens Plaza, change ends, back down the 11st connector to the east end of the 60st tunnel, change ends, up to QBP then Xover to Corona.

You want them to wrong-rail the 11th Street cut into the 60th Street Tunnel? Without a G/O? lol

Ok then get a G/O! The routing I suggest seems, from an outsider anyway, to be much easier.

Not Necessary. Use the middle track geo east of Queens Plaza to turn around.

You could also:
Pitkin Yards -> Canarsie Line and Broadway BMT through Montague St Tunnel -> X over at Lawrence St or Pacific St and change ends -> head north to Queensboro Plaza.

Lexington Ave-63rd St is under construction so routes involving change ends there are out of the question.

No GO required if it's under signal protection.

Pitkin to Canarsie requires going to W 4 St to change ends anyhow like the move I described.

If those crossover switches west of Lex/63 are still working, they could follow the F route from W4 to Lex/63 (arriving on the in-use F track), change ends and wrong rail on the unused 7 Av connection to 57/7, change ends again and proceed to Queensboro Plaza & Corona.
