Most of the pics I've seen never had the ability to zoom in and see detail as clearly as this one does.

It also catches the terminal at it's height of importance and use. The only subway tunnel open in 1906 was the original IRT one, and the terminal was not only handling all the BMT el service, but most of it's pre-dual contracts surface routes, like the Brighton, Culver and West End railroads.

That is a great site, I have bookmarked it.

How did anyone get a hi-def image of the terminal? There were no hi-def cameras around 70 years ago.

It's a high def scan. Most online pictures aren't scanned to such a degree due to file size constraints. Back in the dialup days such a pic would take a minute or two to download.

People in pictures like this are normally afterthoughts. Here, you can see the recent immigrant with his son, the two young ladies talking to two young men, the man on the walkway looking at the camera and cracking a smile, the older woman running for one of the trolleys that's apparently all set to depart. It's humanized.

There were no "high def" cameras back then but view cameras with 8" x 10" sized negatives to provide an eye popping image like Park Row Terminal.

Yep, both the 6th and 9th Ave els had stations on Cortlandt St. The former was on Church St, the latter on Greenwich. I think it's the latter, because I think I see a three track configuration. On the 6th Ave el, the station was on a 2 track segment and didn't widen until it got south of Cortlandt.

On cable, the reason is that they just don't have the bandwidth going back to the headend in the reverse direction. Cable plant has frequencies from 54 MHz to whatever their top is (typically 1 GHz) and the reverse path is from 8 MHz to 50 MHz. Years ago, they used those frequencies for what was called the "T-band" consisting of television channels T-7 through T-10 for feeding cable access studios back to the headend to be turned around on up to 3 public access channels.

With "intarwebs" those reverse feeds were taken away for that purpose and now your "upstream" signals go up on those frequencies and there just isn't enough bandwidth available as compared to the downstream which is typically 100 MHz worth or better.

Pure FIBER is capable of symmetric bandwidth, cable is not.
