OT = Signage and Customer Service

"... you are leaving the Belt Parkway and entering the Cross Island. You never see a sign notifying you that you are on the Cross Island. Instead immediately after the exit for the Cross Island, there is a large green sign notifying you that you now are on the 100th Division Infantry Highway, not the Cross Island Parkway. Am I the only one who sees a problem with this? ..."

You and I are a couple of old farts who like to know what road we are on. Most of the "kids" today use their GPS that has that blinking little arrow & tells them (via a voice) when to turn to get to their destination.

I have a young relative who was using his GPS & arrived an hour behind me at a birthday party because they headed right into a traffic jam while I was listening to CBS 880 & 1010 Wins that alerted me of the problem. I went the Triboro while they were stuck on the Throgs Neck.

Back on topic: Transit Planning too close to the problem ... Yep.
They also need to use the service more often to S-E-E what is happening out there. I worked for a VP at Queens Surface that used the service when ever he could. The drivers bent his ear off when he did.

Huh? Just because one uses gps doesn't mean they can't listen to the traffic reports on the radio. Your argument is ridiculous. In fact, not using gps is pretty dumb.

If you even read the article you would know that it was aimed at tourists and first time users not people like ourselves. Of course regulars anywhere don't need any signs because they know where they are. You need to put yourself in someone else's shoes sometimes and not think only of yourself.

I agree with you on these points.

The whole point is that no sign at all would be preferable to a large green 100th Infantry Division Highway or Lief Ericson Drive sign. If the State wants these commemorations, they should use the small black and white ones used in many places for the POW/MIA Highway. I'm talking about the rectangular ones, not the ones the black and white street signs which are also used in the towns and are fine for those locations.

Funny, I'm looking at the spot where the belt, the Cross island and the southern state all meet on Google Streetview, and I see a sign that says 'exit 25A Southern State Parkway- Eastern Long Island- keep left"; and a sign that says "cross island parkway-whitestone Bridge keep right." the only sign I've ever seen such as you describe, was the one reminding people that the Jackie Robinson is called the Jackie Robinson.

Even more confusing is the lack of signage on the Belt Parkway notifying you of the highway you are driving on. Coming off the BQE going south (or westbound as the signs indicate) following the signage for the Belt Parkway, the first sign you see after you exit the BQE is that you are now on Leif Ericson Drive. You thought you just took the exit for the Belt Parkway, didn’t you?

The next sign you see a few feet further is that now you are on the POW/MIA Highway. What happened to Leif Ericson Drive, you ask yourself, and why aren’t you on the Belt Parkway (which, of course, you are)? How many accidents are caused by last minute decisions due to poorly-worded, misleading, or missing signage, or signage placed too close or even beyond the actual decision point?

The POW/MIA sign is not even placed in the correct location since the POW/MIA Highway is a co-named highway going cross-country starting from Sunrise Highway in Long Island, then along the Belt Parkway, Verrazano Bridge, Staten Island Expressway and on into New Jersey and beyond, never touching the segment of the Belt Parkway where the sign near Exit 1 is located.

Go back to the BQE for a minute - - almost all signs point to the BQE even though the section from Exit 26 (Hamilton) to the V/Z Narrows Bridge is called the Gowanus Expressway - - really who cares if it's the Belt or Leif Ericcson? All I think while driving is to stay on the left lane for the Belt (Parkway or System) or to the right towo lanes for the Gowanus BQE. I am also aware of the POW/MIA sign along the Belt but how many drivers really pay attention to that sign? Or better yet, hom many drivers really pay attention to the "temporary" 35-40 MPH signs along the Gowanus BQE?

As I said, we are used to the confusing signage. It's the tourists who are confused. In my travelings in half the States, I found the most confusing signage in Delaware, Maryland, Virgiinia and DC where I was constantly getting lost. Those were the days before GPS. Funny thing is I never got lost once in any of the western states. Could they be doing it correct perhaps?

It's kinda confusing for first timers as you have to stay on the left to go right and right to go left. Of course there are many places like that elsewhere too.

Tourists usually get their directions ahead of time; they don't care what the name of the highway they're already driving on is; they want to know the exit number where they need to get off the highway and reach their destination. First-time users are generally familiar with the areas they're traveling in; I know my way around NYC highways because I was a passenger for 18+ years before I was ever a driver.

The parkway you refer to isn't even technically the 'Belt Parkway'; it's a system of parkways, including the Cross Island, built as the Belt Parkway System, designed to connect the city to the actual parks in Long Island. There are THREE parkways that are continuous, with consecutively numbered exits and referred to colloquially as the Belt Parkway; the Shore Parkway from the Gowanus to Cross Bay Blvd; Southern Parkway from Cross Bay Blvd to Sunrise Highway; and the Laurelton Parkway from Sunrise Highway to the Southern State. The Cross Island is part of the 'Belt Parkway System'. No one needs, and few care, to know that the highway they're currently traveling on has changed names if the exit numbers don't reset.

Even though the Gowanus runs generally generally westbound from the Prospect to the Battery Tunnel, I278 is an interstate route that primarily travels northeast-southwest through the city; and would actually make more sense if it were signed north-south instead.

"First time travelers are generally familiar with the areas they are traveling in."

Totally a nonsense statement. Just because you were a passenger for 18 years doesn't mean everyone was. If you are visiting a state for the first time how could you possibly be familiar with it? I suppose you've never gotten lost.

I am quite familiar with the history of th Belt Parkway, originally called Circumferential Parkway, but it was too hard to spell. I don't need a refresher course. And actually it is now Leif Ericson Drive from the Gowanus to Knapp Street and Shore Parkway to Cross Bay. Only the service road is Shore Parkway west of Knapp Street.

I agree with you that I 278 should be signed for a north-south road.

As I said I know it by now, but you shouldn't have signs that confuse. The worst thing about the BQE/ Belt now is the construction and lack of lane markings and how the roadway changes every month with the detours. There is also a place where a lane just disappears.

The idea is that the higher traffic flow goes to the left, no matter the direction the ramp may eventually turn. The extension of the Gowanus to the VZ was tacked on to the existing highway structure there, which is why you keep right to go left.

If you're visiting a state for the first time, you're a tourist. I've gotten lost, but I know how to read a map, and with GPS built into nearly every cell phone, and everyone on the planet having a cell phone, 'getting lost' isn't what it used to be.

People traveling to unfamiliar areas will research ahead of time.

Especially as GPS devices either can download traffic data, or have a button that detours around the next 5 miles or whatever which a person can call up if they hear the traffic report.

The idea is that the higher traffic flow goes to the left, no matter the direction the ramp may eventually turn.

Which is why the Hamilton exit area (going north-east) sucks with the BBT on the left. Most of the time, people want to stay on the BQE, not go into the toll-charged BBT.

Also if you are not in an urban area, youbare not updated as to detours. If I listened to my GPS, I would have been killed twice. Once it told me to turn right into the East River at 79th Street where there is no exit. . Other times it insisted I make illegal turns. They are no substitute for good signage.

I used to get confused when seeing a Verrazano Bridge sign miles away from the bridge and saying to myself "how could I be near that? And afraid if I would enter, there would me a toll around the corner.

No one uses the terms Laurelton Parkway or Southern Parkway anymore. People still however use Gowanus although no signs say that either.

Not everyone has a smart phone and GPSs don't give information on detours in none urban areas. They are not as dependable as one might think.
