If that is indeed true then wouldn't it invalidate the rationale for eschewing a 75 foot, five door design while pushing an R160 Mk II design? I thought we had to have a virtual clone of the R160 so they could be delivered quickly while more advanced designs would require longer a longer procurement period. Surely a 75 foot car wouldn't stretch the procurement period much beyond 7 years. |

The R40s and R38s were always the better performers out of the entire class of 60' Stainless Steel SMEES. Unfortunately, the R38's bodies were shot and the fiberglass bonnets for the R40 Slants weren't doing so well, but I do agree the R40Ms would have made better interim replacements than the R42s. |

Mechanical problems with R32's are fixable. It is just an attitude problem about not wanting to do SMS's. Someone ought to get fired over the Phase II scrapping. This is much like Keipper scrapping the GOH R30's.OTOH, the R42's will likely be deemed unsafe by that time, like the R44. |

These cars were doing find 5 years ago, I think they suffer more from neglect and a sense of impending retirement than of old age. Once the MTA commits to them for the long term (6 years is a long term) perhaps they will start treating them better. |
