It happened at the Prospect Park Q line station during an apparent robbery attempt. The attendant refused to let the pair into the booth, and one of the suspects became angry, allegedly poured liquid onto the front of the glass booth and lit it on fire. Both men ran away, and the clerk called 911. She was then taken to Methodist Hospital for observation. The MTA says its token booths all have automatic fire extinguishers in addition to handheld ones. |

This is a sad thing :(The booth pictured is of the newer variety while many stations still have the square boxes but they all have the automatic suppression system. |

There is a pic of the square boxes I was referring to in this NYDN article of the fire: http://www.nydailynews.com/news/ny_crime/2011/06/29/2011-06-29_robbers_torch_brooklyn_subway_token_booth_terrified_clerk_puts_out_fire.html |

If they don't already, the booths should have some sort of barrier that can be quickly closed over the money dish area to prevent anything from actually getting into the booth. |

I imagine the element of surprise there would have exceeded the speed to get at a slam button. Given the apparent design though, a well-aimed extinguisher would blow it all back on the perp. Sure hope there's more than one big can in each and that every single one of them is fully charged and maintained. That'd be my first safety demand. Otherwise, looks like the new booths are a lot safer than the old tinker toys. |

The agent doesn't have to hit a button. Upon a flame, the fire supression system will automatically go off.THere is also a nighttime booth apature next to the open window type. It has a slide feature to go from inside to outside. I have no idea how many people actually use them though. THat is a nasty station. I worked there about 18 years ago when it was a brick booth and closed at 2am.. Very few people paid. When i closed the gate at midnight (to stop farebeaters) most went to the other side, a few went through the iron maiden. When the cop said to go to the other side, you listened. THat was your escort, not the other railroad clerk. |

No surprise. I don't know the territory, but when I worked there I was inside some of the older wooden jobs on the IND and wow, just wow. :( |
