Thieves torch Prospect Park (B), (Q) subway booth, agent inside escaped unharmed

A brave subway station agent refused to let two would-be robbers into her Brooklyn booth Wednesday morning, even as they set it ablaze with her trapped inside, transit officials and police said.

The clerk quickly grabbed a fire extinguisher and put out the blaze by spraying through a small money tray before calling police. She was shaken up but not injured.

The terrifying attack, reminiscent of booth torchings in the 1980s and 1990s, began when two men walked up to the enclosure at the Prospect Park Q station just after 5 a.m., pounding on the window and demanding the unidentified 39-year-old clerk let them in.

“Either you open the door and let us in or we’re burning you out,” they told her, according to union official Joe Bermudez.

After failing to break in, the two men poured a flammable liquid on the booth’s glass window and lit it on fire. Then the thugs, described as being in their late teens or early 20s, fled.

The clerk, an agency employee since 1994, was taken to New York Methodist Hospital for observation and to treat trauma, where her two children were relieved to find she was physically fine, the union official said.

“I know for a fact that she’s afraid to go back,” Bermudez said, “especially if they’re not caught.”

Transit officials likened the attempted robbery to similar subway booth fires years ago, including a 1995 attack that killed a subway token booth clerk. A similar incident had just been depicted in the movie “Money Train.”

Police were looking for two men accused of setting a Brooklyn subway token booth on fire Wednesday morning while the attendant was inside.

It happened at the Prospect Park Q line station during an apparent robbery attempt.

The attendant refused to let the pair into the booth, and one of the suspects became angry, allegedly poured liquid onto the front of the glass booth and lit it on fire.

Both men ran away, and the clerk called 911. She was then taken to Methodist Hospital for observation.

The MTA says its token booths all have automatic fire extinguishers in addition to handheld ones.

Wow. :(

Sure glad to see the booths are more substantial than they used to be at least. Saved her life!

This is a sad thing :(

The booth pictured is of the newer variety while many stations still have the square boxes but they all have the automatic suppression system.

If they don't already, the booths should have some sort of barrier that can be quickly closed over the money dish area to prevent anything from actually getting into the booth.

I imagine the element of surprise there would have exceeded the speed to get at a slam button. Given the apparent design though, a well-aimed extinguisher would blow it all back on the perp. Sure hope there's more than one big can in each and that every single one of them is fully charged and maintained. That'd be my first safety demand. Otherwise, looks like the new booths are a lot safer than the old tinker toys.

The agent doesn't have to hit a button. Upon a flame, the fire supression system will automatically go off.
THere is also a nighttime booth apature next to the open window type.
It has a slide feature to go from inside to outside. I have no idea how many people actually use them though.
THat is a nasty station. I worked there about 18 years ago when it was a brick booth and closed at 2am.. Very few people paid. When i closed the gate at midnight (to stop farebeaters) most went to the other side, a few went through the iron maiden.
When the cop said to go to the other side, you listened. THat was your escort, not the other railroad clerk.
