I think that opinion is shared by many.:)

Personally, I really can't say since I rode on the R-16s exactly twice, 19 years apart, for very short hops. Once on a 15 across the Williamsburg Bridge and once on a Moe from Canal St. to Essex St.

Just remember these two guiding principles when you are feeling a little ruffled;

1) It is always far better to be pissed off than "pissed on"!
2) Always remember that things could be worse. You could be licking stamps and sorting letters over at Stantec.

Before Chrystie, they were fine on the Eastern Division as long as they ran them on the 14th Street line when it snowed.

Not much was required of them: 6 car trains at 12 minutes intervals on the #15. The TA was very stingy about running 8 cars train then, maybe for a 2 hour window. That means they slept most of the time.

After Chrystie, they just went to hell. The RR was not serviced readily from CIY, and ENY shop probably knew how to take care of them.

The same is true of the R42 today: treat them gently on the J and they run fine. When some idiot decided to haul them off to the E thinking they were better than Phase II r32's, they fell apart.

I liked them back in 1962 because of their seating arrangement, akin to the R 10's and unlike the R 27's/30's, with their IRT styled seating. They appeared to have rapidly deteriorated in 1970 and afterwards.

The R42's went to the E for one reason only:

Because their air conditioning was more dependable than that of the R32's.

They also ran three-car R-16 consists on the 10. Yeah, the R-16s didn't care too much for heavy snow. They'd send out the BMT standards to battle the elements.

I remember R-16s on Myrtle/Chambers middays circa 1959 just before it became a rush hour only service. That was also around the same time that Sat Myrtle/Chambers service was also eliminated. Prior to early 1959 it was a 6 day a week service. I don't really know why the R-16s ended up on Myrtle since at that time the Multis were assigned to that line but as I mentioned in another post, at that time I liked the R-16s and took advantage of the opportunity to ride them on a line which did not normally use them.

I lived near Woodhaven Blvd in the 1960's. I never once saw a R16 on the 10. Just all the 15's, some 14's. I believe you though.

When did 3 car 10's of R16's run - Saturdays ?

Interesting rumor heard today that as of May 1, R-32s on the A will not be so rare. From what I heard the plan is to take 16 R-46 consists from Pitkin and 2 from Jamaica and run them on the (C) line. 192 R-32s would be switched to the "A" line for Lefferts Blvd. Service only. Rockaway service will continue to be R-46s. As I said, so far, "unconfirmed".
So has there been any movement towards this, or confirmation and/or revision of it? (Although it's too late for me to act on it. More of a "what if".)
