Q About the Meadowbrook Parkway and the LIRR

Posted by Mitch45 on Fri Mar 4 12:41:48 2011

Driving northbound on the Meadowbrook this morning, I spotted a very rusty, very graffitied steel railroad bridge overpass about 25-50 feet off the right side of the roadway. This was located near the huge garbage recycling plant near Roosevelt Field. The overpass is at an approximately 45 degree angle to the Meadowbrook roadway.

My question: which LIRR line used this overpass? At first I thought it was part of the right of way that once connected West Hempstead to Mineola but that doesn't seem right. Was it part of the spur that once went to the area where Mitchel Field is today? Or something in that area?

Any info is appreciated.

Most likely that's a remnant of the Central Branch. The spur to Clinton Ave, from Garden City is a remnant of the line, once the line ran all the way to the junction of the Ronkonkoma Branch in Farmingdale and then on to Babylon. The Hempstead Branch uses this RR's ROW from CLP to Bellrose.

From Google Maps it looks like it was a spur off of the Central branch that ends here:

Here's a map of the branch (as I can trace it on Google Maps):

You nailed it! Go to Central Page 5, WW II to Present, and scroll down to the last two photos. That is the bridge overpass that I saw today. I didn't see the concrete supports but I didn't get a very good look at it (as I was going about 55 mph at the time) and the bridge overpass is now in a wooded area. The supports may be there in poor condition or maybe they were carted away, who knows.

Good job.

The line is definately dead, a lot of it north of that overpass has been paved over. I am surprised that bridge still stands.

This line would also be a nice way to bring rail service to the Nassau Coliseum.

I believe that there are two different things being discussed here.

One is the bridge OVER the Meadowbrook Pkwy that leads to a spur branch that formerly ended around the location of the old Roosevelt Raceway.

The second is the bridge NEAR the Meadowbrook Parkway that Mitch45 saw that was part of the Central branch.

It is not the Mitchel Field Shuttle but, the formerly electrified track to Roosevelt Raceway; it ended at the RR terminal at Zeckendorf Boulevard. The terminal and stairs are still there although, of course, not in good condition, and can be seen from Zeckendorf. It was connected to it (the Central Branch) until about 15 years ago, when the connection was severed by the LIRR. This track ran from a connection with the Central Branch at Commercial Avenue and Quentin Roosevelt Boulevard to the Raceway. It was severed to allow the LIRR to build a signal storage facility in their former freight and track yard at Commercial and QRB. Track is still in place from QRB and Stewart Avenue north and over that bridge. Reconnected to the Central Branch, it would make a great place for an operating trolley museum.

It's not that hard. What you saw was the spur to Roosevelt Field, the "Mitchell Field shuttle" continued along the Central RR mainline to where it ends today, at Endo Blvd. That area was vast and has been completely built over, including the Coliseum, Hofstra and Nassau Community College, as well as other institutions. Art Huenke's site does not do a good job of explaining what is what, even if his content is awesome.

But the bridge I saw was not OVER the Meadowbrook, it was an overpass off to the side of the highway.

Take a look at Arrt's Archives. Go to the section about the Central RR lines, Page 5, WW II to Present, and scroll down to the last two photos. That is the bridge overpass that I saw today. I didn't see the concrete supports but I didn't get a very good look at it (as I was going about 55 mph at the time) and the bridge overpass is now in a wooded area. The supports may be there in poor condition or maybe they were carted away, who knows.

The overpass was NOT over the highway.

Is the terminal visible on Google maps? I tried looking at the place where the last trace of the ROW ends at Zeckendorf (some distance beyond Bob Andersen's traced route), but nothing is really there except a wide building, hidden behind trees and bushes. At the point where the route ends, there is even less.

To be perfectly honest, I've never seen it up close, just from a distance while driving on the Meadowbrook Parkway. I've walked almost to the end of the Central Branch east of Endo Boulevard, but something was blocking the rest of the right-of-way, so I couldn't complete my "investigation." Is the bridge you're all talking about a complete bridge / overpass, or just an abutment or piers?

The green line should have been extended further to Zeckendorf Boulevard, which was where the Roosevelt Raceway terminal was (and still is, complete with a staircase) located.

The red X is correct. I am quite familiar with that relic and it is east of the northbound lanes, as the X indicates.

There really was no absolute need to remove the bridge if underneath it was filled in; even without maintenance, where could it go? It is a bit strange though. Probably everyone wonders why it wasn't removed.
