BMT/ex-SIRT Paint Colors

Does anyone have a good picture or description of the mid-1950s paint scheme the TA used for the BMT Type E (ex-SIRT) cars? I think the maroon and blue combo had a lot more character than the older chocolate brown and I'm finally thinking about painting my brass WP Car
67' set after 25 years or so.

I liked that coloring more than the traditional BMT/BoT brown, even with the IRT or D-Type doors and I think regular BMT 67'cars could look great in blue and maroon--the blue looked almost like the dark blue Bluebird (Compartment) color.

Any suggestions about proper model paint colors?

Thanks much,

Where's the blue? Or is that blue on the roof?

Could be blue under all that grime, something in SIRT usage would not have been an issue:

does anyone have interior shots of these cars, as they ran on the BMT. Supposedly the seating was rearranged from the way they were on Staten Island..

I've only seen interior shots when they were on the SIRT, usually at the very end (early 70's).

I don't think it was blue. It seemed to be a sort of gray similar to the gray trim that edged the beige stripe on the R-15s.

The seating arrangement remained the same EXCEPT they didn't flip back and forth anymore- they were secured in one direction, axiflow fans were installed and the door controls were moved to the inside (center) of the car (as the AB steels) the R.R.headlight was also removed. They were numbered in the 2900 series often called B-29's by the motorman of the BMT-operating on the Culver Shuttle, Franklin Shuttle and occasionally the West End- SIRT 500 series (trailers) were never used in passenger service mostly for Car Inspector quarters in various BMT yards.

It's over a half-century, but I was thinking that the doors and trim were a dark blue, but amn't sure about the roof. As I recall, that red in the photos was much closer to a maroon--could be a film effect.

Thanks for the suggestions.

I have heard that the BMT ex-SIRT cars were also known as the E-Types.

They also operated on the Culver Express from Ditmas to Nassau Loop--five-car trains and people running down the platform at 36th Street.

BTW, for Newkirk--I mentioned in my original post that the ex-SIRT were known (in the BMT Division offices on Jay Street at least) as "E-Types." I don't know if the five trailers were called "EX" types, but it sounds plausible. Could be wrong.

Since the trailers never entered revenue passenger service, I don't think the "X" trailer designation would have been applied.

The SIRT did run a six-car train. I took a shot of one in Aug. 1958. The image is on Subway.org, under "Stations -- Staten Island Rapid Transit, Oakwood Hts. Station, image #74059."

That day I walked the SIRT from St. George and got as far as Oakwood Hts. It was about 6:00 p.m. when that 6-car train passed just north of the station on the old shoo-fly before the grade separation.

In the rush hour, the SIRT was very busy, even in those pre-Verazzano Bridge days, and long trains were common. But a 6-car train was even a surprise to me!

The SIRT cars were the same shade of maroon as the R-15s and 17s.

I've heard that too but I can't understand why they would have done that since there were older cars that were specifically built for the BMT that would have been more entitled to receive that designation. If the BMT's car type lettering were to be properly applied, the Multis would be definitely deserving of the E type designation and the Qs would merit an F type. If the Bluebird were to receive a type, then it would probably be called a G type although I'm not sure if the BMT would have assigned a type designation to a small experimental fleet. That would mean that the absolutely lowest letter type that should have been assigned to the SIRT cars would have been G if the bluebirds weren't typed or H if they were.

Thanks--that matches my memory. The R-15s had probably the hsndsomest paint job of all the pre-1960s cars, with the possible exception of the BMT Compartment cars.

Now I need to find the model paints.

Thanks again,

I thought that myself. The next best paint scheme was the R-36 World's Fair turquoise and white racing stripe scheme which was also applied to the R-10s and which should have been applied to the entire painted fleet.
