It would be interesting to see a version of these on the Northeast Corridor.

Given that Amtrak's only electrified service is on the Northeast Corridor (and that dinky spur to Harrisburg), it's highly likely that you'll see them on the Northeast Corridor. :-)

These new engines won't, um, replace ALL of the AEM-7s, will they?

IIRC, the plan is to replace some of the older unrefurbished AEM-7s, but eventually to replace the refurbished AEM-7s and the HHP-8s to create one uniform electric fleet. Supposedly, per railfan rumours, the HHP-8s have been a disappointment, the older AEM-7s aren't as reliable as desired, and like the ALP-44, parts are slowly becoming a problem to procure. Some would argue that an overhaul should extend the AEM-7's lifespan, but logistics of the overhaul programme for ACs left Amtrak in questionable situation with locomotives stuck waiting for the ONIX IGBT motors to come from France which left a bit of stress on the electric fleet. FWIW, one could argue that since the Rc fleet (which served as the base of the AEMs) in Sweeden is still operating, Amtrak should be able to keep the AEMs in operation. Of course, nobody ever wonders if our friends at Amtrak have followed the same maintenance regime as their colleagues at SJ, and if it's just simply too expensive to follow such a maintenance regime in the States...
