Beginning in 1962, IIRC, old listing were retained with the two letters only, but any new or changed listings had all numbers. After 1978, all remaining letter listings were converted to all numbers. For a few years before 1962, there were arbitrary two-letter codes assigned. I recall, for instance, RN-3 (Mill Basin and Canarsie), XX-4 (north Bronx), HT-7 (somewhere in Manhattan).
