It is probably a hot topic among liberal Jews here in Israel, and also around the world. If successful, the implementation of such a policy would represent yet another successful attempt of the ultra-orthodox community, which makes up a small part of the overall Israeli population and a larger and larger portion of the population in Jerusalem each year (I can't find specific numbers though, other than the fact the number of children enrolled in ultra-orthodox schools has grown significantly in recent years for several reasons). It doesn't help that as a result of Israel's parliamentary system of government, the ultra-orthodox political parties right now hold a very disproportionate share of political power considering how many seats they have in the parliament. There was a large protest last year in front of the Prime Minister's residence when there was a chance of gender separated seating being legalized on board transit buses in and to/from Jerusalem, so this is an issue that means something to many people.
