Can you imagine destroying so many buildings and uprooting so many people just to widen a street? Check out what was done to 6th Ave. The el turned east on 3rd St and then south on West Broadway because that's where 6th Avenue used to end. When they decided to build the IND, the simply carved an extension right through existing structures, all the way to Canal St. Houston St was widened when they built the IND, leading to even more destruction.How about this pic showing the 9th Ave el station at Cortland St on Greenwich. This intersection no longer exists, it's basically in the middle of the WTC site, directly above the destroyed IRT subway station. |
