Great question, Will! The predecessor to the CSS&SB was the Chicago, Lake Shore and South Bend Railway. It ran from Michigan City to South Bend, two distinct municipalities. After going into receivership and being purchased by the CSS&SB in 1925, a 1926 change in power system change allowed for operations to Randolph Street Station in Chicago. So back in the day, the CSS&SB ran between two municipalities, one of which was not considered a suburb of Chicago. And certainly, Michigan City and South Bend did not consider themselves to be suburbs of each other. |
