Interesting, given that track sharing with mainline applications is not an essential feature of a Stadtbahn. Our friends in Frankfurt, Dusseldorf, Stuttgart, Hannover, Duisberg, Essen, and Dortmund may have some concerns about your sentiment. Even in the case of Köln, the system was a stadtbahn before its connection to Bonn.

FWIW, it's impossible to build a real tram-train in the United States (and Canada) because the only vehicle that can comply with FRA regs is a full-blown train, and running a Silverliner V in the middle of the street does not constitute a tram. Hell, the GTW 2/6s aren't really trams either...
