The orthodox rabbinate in Jerusalem wields considerable power, so much so that many more secular Jews have moved away from Jerusalem.Also, the membership of religious parties in various governing coalitions has resulted in a variety of laws passed to appease their interest, including laws relating to Jewish identity and conversion, public transportation on the Sabbath, military service of yeshiva students, and more. One does not have to be the Sanhedrin, running a formal theocracy, to wield political power. |
