I may not be the last word as an Halachic authority, but I am not aware of any religious requirement for segregated transportation facilities. There are no segregated El Al planes, no segregated Eged buses (that I am aware of), and somehow the haredi seem to manage to get around. Religious men and women ride in automobiles together all the time. If the problem is seeing immodestly dressed people, it is hard to see why the light rail system would pose a greater risk than walking down the street. This sounds to me like the rabbis throwing their weight around just because they can, to show who's boss. Just like their fundamentalist doppelgangers in the US Bible Belt, and like the mullahs in Iran and Saudi Arabia and elsewhere. Religious extremists are all the same; the specifics of their theology is nearly irrelevant. Anywhere they can get their hands on the levers of power, they will use them to coerce and intimidate, and impose their strict rules on everyone else. They are to be resisted, everywhere. |
