They also have women only cars in Egypt for safety reasons. You say the division here would be for religious reasons and assume that is better. However, the issue in Israel is that the ultra-orthodox would like to impose their lifestyle on EVERYONE here, and would rather all buses (or the ones they use at least) be gender segregated. There are other ways in which they try to impose their lifestyle on others, including throwing rocks and rioting in response to the municipality opening a parking lot on a Saturday, insisting daylight savings end before Yom Kippur (meaning daylight savings will end this year on Sunday, September 12, and in 2013 it will end September 8, long before any other country that uses daylight savings), and are trying to give the Rabbinate as much control over issues such as conversion and determining who is Jewish as possible as part of a larger effort to delegitimize liberal forms of Judaism. |
