"Why does the El go underground near the sidewalk between 45th and 44th Streets instead of in the middle of Market Street?"

The Market Street Elevated originally left the subway at about 23 Street and ran on structure through West Philadelphia. In the fall of 1955 a subway tunnel under the Schuylkill River was completed and brought the line back to the elevated west of 44 Street. To avoid disrupting service during construction, the connection was made from the north side of Market Street.
