NYWT doesn't make a profit from its fares, it runs on private and public subsidies. Most of those figures aren't available online but in the case of Schaefer Landing, the developer invested $750,000 for starting the service and the condo owners association pays $100,000 a year to keep the service running. I guess other condos have similar deals. You probably already know that the Rockaway service was paid by the city and the IKEA service by IKEA. As long as enough subsidies come in, the services will keep on running.NY Waterway's service started with private investments from Wall St. big shots and offered non-stop service under 15 minutes. By the time it ended, it was running on government subsidies and had additional stops. When the subsidies stopped, so did the service. |
